A bestselling novel in the UK's Regency romance chart
"Dark, emotional, and romantic, The Passionate Love of a Rake was a brilliant historical romance! I loved book 1 in this series, so I had high hopes for this book. And, it met every one. Absolutely fantastic-I loved this book!" ~ Farrah

"The Passionate Love of a Rake overflows with sensuous Regency romance...This story oozes romance and heartbreak." ~ Jolliffe

"Jane Lark has a unique style of writing that so easily draws the reader into the story, swept along in the world of Regency Romance! ... I am well and truly in lust with Robert Marlow!" ~ JB ~ Brook Cottage Books

"Jane Lark proves to me that her debut 'THE ILLICIT LOVE OF A COURTESAN' was not a one off, and that she can write a very romantic, deeply emotional and sexually charged story for an adult audience that appreciates her wonderful prose, witty dialogue and an interesting plot." ~ Bookworm 2 Bookworm

"I devoured Jane Lark's first book The Illicit Love of a Courtesan and could not wait to start reading this one. Similar to her first book, I was immediately sucked into the storyline, I have no idea how Jane does this, but there is something so truly magical and passionate about her books that it is really hard to stop reading before you reach the end of her novels...If you are looking for a beautifully crafted romantic and steamy read then Jane's historical romances are just the ones for you." ~ Heidi

"To say I have been eagerly awaiting, what is now, affectionately known by fans as, Robert's story, would be an understatement. I chomped a the bit until I could let myself loose on this book and Jane Lark... thank you for not letting your readers down!" ~ Best Chick Lit. Com

HASH(0xa0929b34) out of 5 stars I'm still irritated by the time I spent on this. March 22 2015

Tortured plot. Tortured prose. Tortured reader.

This seemed 5,000 pages long. Where to begin? Well, there were the Big Misunderstandings during which the H ran off before the h could explain. He behaved like a hot-headed dummy. Then, the Big Secrets. I began to wonder if the author would ever share them with us because the h sure didn't. There was always the convenient reason to keep mum. Oh, and one minute Robert was driving a high-perch phaeton, the next a curricle...during the same short drive.

Modern slang..."He did not do young, and he did not do innocent," "gave me a lift home," "I was a pain," "hadn't a clue," etc.

Then there are the titles, I thought I'd be safe on this score with an English author, but nooo. The Duchess of Devonshire is Lady Devonshire??? The second son of an earl is a lord? The son of a duke's daughter is heir to her father's dukedom? Not unless that provision is in the Letters Patent, by an Act of Parliament, or a monarch's Warrant.

I thought this was supposed to be a *historical* romance.

I saw in her profile that the author is a Kindle overall Top 25, bestselling author. I don't have the secret decoder ring to figure that one out. The profile also says she writes *authentic* historical romances. Where are they? This is my second try and it's just gone from bad to worse.

HASH(0x9fd50870) out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTED March 7 2014

Jane Grey, the Dowager Duchess of Sutton, thought she had finally escaped her hellish marriage to the Duke of Sutton, who had been four times her age. But, even in death, the old Duke had engineered another type of hell. The will had left the Duke's fortune to her, but the Duke's son was having none of this. He was trying to overturn the will in court. He was also threatening and harassing Jane. To escape all the trouble for awhile, Jane went to London to stay with a friend. While there she ran into a childhood friend, Lord Robert Marlow, the Eleventh Earl of Barrington. Robert and Jane have an unresolved history that the couple finds themselves exploring.

One of the first descriptions I encounter about Robert is the following quote:

"He did not do young and he did not do innocent."

This book is described as historical romance. So, what is contemporary, slang style doing in this book? The plot of this book is very thin, and unevenly spaced throughout. I would advise reading the first few pages of this book, then skipping to the midway point and beginning, again. Unless, of course, one just wants to read about the historical romance requisite couple of outings in Hyde Park, and the descriptions about balls, without any references that would move this plot along.

Both the H and the h have secrets, but until the midpoint of this book the author fails to provide the reader with any clues to keep the reader interested. Finally, after half the book is gone, when one has asked oneself, numerous times why one keeps slogging through, the author sees fit to begin her story. Jane Lark proved in the prequel to this book, "The Illicit Love of a Courtesan", that she has talent. I looked so forward to Robert's story, but I had to read through at least 150 pages to finally get to his story. This book is a novella described as a novel. I so hope Lark finds her mojo, again, before her next book.

HASH(0x9fb1521c) out of 5 stars Disappointed! March 9 2014
By Reader Lady - Published on Amazon.com

While I enjoyed Illicit Love tremendously and overlooked the problem with titles, this one just didn't do it for me. The story felt contrived and the passion between the H/h was lack luster. This also had problems that carried over from the first book. A second son of an earl is not a lord. The son of a duke's daughter cannot inherit the dukedom. While these issues do not make or break the story, they did pull me out of the book.

I loved this book and the series. So far I love this story the best in the series. Robert is a complex man with deep feelings but so stubborn to let these feelings out. Baggage has kept him a playboy and unable to commit to any relationship. Jane has even more baggage than Robert if its even possible. But the common factor between these two is after so many years they have never let their feelings for one another diminish. These feelings have been locked away so long can they rekindle the passion? Read it to find out.

While reading this I felt sorry for this couple. The angst is off the charts with this couple. I fell in love with Robert in the first book and was so excited to see that he had a book. Robert and Jane made me feel their despair, love for one another, grief, sorrow and every emotion in between. I felt so heart broken over the loss of time for Jane but was rewarded plentiful as the book went on.

The writing in this book was so well done I was captivated from the first chapter. Jane Lark can write such a beautiful love scene tasteful yet steamy. I am a huge fan of her work. I swooned over Robert and rooted for him and Jane’s HEA to the bitter end.

Jane Lark’s writing style flows steady to the very end. She gives you a nice bow-tie epilogue to complete the book. These are my favorite type of books. The descriptiveness in Ms. Lark’s writing will make you feel as though you are a fly on the wall.

I chose to read the entire series and started at the beginning. I am glad I did so I discovered the characters as they entered the story. You do not have to do this. Each book can be read by itself. I highly recommend this book and the entire series you will not be disappointed. Jane Lark is one of my favorite authors.

My Favorite Quotes:
It had been the kiss of youth. It had borne none of the skill his kisses did now, and yet, it had stolen her very soul.

At least a broken heart is something you’ve never had to bear. - Robert

I’ve spent too many years seeking to be good enough for you. I am afraid of losing you. – Robert

She is more than good for me. She is me. – Robert

“Sleep, darling, you’ve earned a rest. I’ll take him to meet his uncle. Besides, you need to build your strength back up. I want a dozen more.” Her lips lifted in a sleepy smile and she whispered, “Not on your life,” before nodding off.

The Passionate Love of a Rake, Jane Lark.
Review from Jeannie Zelos Book reviews
So having read the first book in Jane's historical series and loved it I was keen to read this story about older brother Robert.
In much the same way as Ellen from the first book, Jane was also stuck in a lifestyle she didn't want and couldn't escape. Her elderly husband has died and left her his fortune, but his estranged son isn't happy – he's got the estates and lots of property but he wants the money too. He's a terrifying man and threatens Jane, telling her he always gets what he wants, and this time its not just the money but Jane herself. He's got a wife and eight children, but plans to make Jane his mistress. Her marriage to his father was unhappy, she was forced into it by her parents at just sixteen and Sutton used her as a show-piece, something to display to friends, and show off his control and domination of her. Trying to escape Joshua she flees to an old friend who's living in London.
There's she meets childhood friend Robert one evening at a function. He thinks she left him for money, that their relationship meant nothing to her, and he's spent the intervening years strengthening his reputation as the most notorious rake in Society. Once he sees Jane though all his old feelings for her come back, and he realises they never really left. He still sees her as a money grabber though, but through a series of events they take up a friendship, with him constantly trying for more. He's under the assumption that she must have had affairs in the past, so why not with him, but she stands firm – ish...:) After all he's a smooth tongued, handsome man, and once was so much more to her. She keeps seeing the old Robert, and not the one in front of her. Its a backwards and forwards romance, full of drama and emotion, misunderstandings and mistakes, and shows far too well just how powerless women were in Regency times. I loved the little day to day descriptions, how real Jane and Robert felt to me, and of course the deliciously erotic sexual encounters. Robert had learned Alot since they parted! Its priced at £2.99 for 339 so lots of time to really expand the drama and scenes :) If you love historical romance this is a great book for you, its more than just a sweet love story, with plots that keep on being revealed, til they add up to one huge conclusion.
Stars: Four and a half. Really enjoyed it, not an insipid historical novel but one full of passions and drama.
