Product Description

From the Inside Flap

The intricate designs that fill this collection of Pennsylvania Dutch scherenschnitte feature rambling phantoms, laughing ghosts, and dancing witches. The accompanying poems, written in the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect with an English translation, conjure the spirit of Halloween.

As old as the culture itself, this style of scissors cutting is a cherished tradition. Through exacting incisions and artfully shaped features, Peter V. Fritsch creates elaborate cuttings with sinister moons, mischievous jack-o-lanterns, and frightful ghouls. A brief history of the Pennsylvania Dutch culture and dialect, a glossary of dialect terms, and an instructional page for readers to make their own Halloween paper cutting round out the book.

Peter V. Fritsch has practiced the art of scherenschnitte (scissors cutting) and fractur (calligraphic drawing and lettering) for more than four decades. A seventh-generation Pennsylvania Dutchman living on his ancestral farm, Fritsch fluently speaks and writes in the dialect. He is a retired teacher, having taught art in the public school system and Pennsylvania-German history and culture at the college level. Fritsch lives in Alburtis, Pennsylvania.

I purchased this a part of several design/pattern books that I am putting away as a Cristmas Gift. This is a very old craft. On that my hubbie use do a long time ago. They make pretty gifts and decorations for everything from showers to Christmas and even permanent wall hanging. They can also work for most ages. It has been difficult to find idea books. Something my hubbie needs to help him with his creative side. I was thrilled to find this book and so many others on this site. So many for beginner to a more experienced cutter. This is craft can be inexpensive to pricy depending on material used and use of the finished project. It is all up to you. Great family projects as well. I would recommend this to anyone young person to senior if you are interested in paper craft.
So many applications. So much fun.

HASH(0x9bc39f0c) out of 5 stars Discovering A New Craft Sept. 5 2011

This book intrigued me with the beautiful dust cover picture. Then after reviewing the contents I thought I would like to try and create some of the amazing cutouts. I belong to a small local craft club and we are always looking for new crafts to try. I made one of the more intricate cuttings and showed it to our members. All but two of our members asked to do this craft in our workshop so it was well received. The author has done a beautiful job in drawing attention to a forgotten art and the poems that accompany the drawings are a big plus. I recommend this book for anyone who loves crafts or for anyone who enjoys seeing the beauty in a simple concept.

This book is a wonderful Halloween treat to present to your children, grandchildren, and adults who enjoy beautiful scherenschnitte. Teachers would love this for their classrooms.
It is an awesome collection of intrique designs and for art collectors,
this book is a treasure. The poems are enjoyable... printed in both English and Pennsylvania German.

Interesting imagery of pumpkins, ghouls, ghosts and the accompanying poetry with translations. The use of silhouettes with a Halloween theme go hand in hand.

This is my favorite time of year. I am always on the lookout for Fall and Halloween decorating ideas. This book is overflowing with wonderfully detailed designs that can be transferred to construction paper or fake pumpkins and cut out with ease. The poems are a nice touch giving you a flavor for the times and the artists that created these lovely designs.

This book is amazing! Wonderful Scherenschnitte examples from the Pennsylvania Dutch. The author includes poems with each cutting. This would be a great book for anyone who likes Halloween. At first I was worried because all the pages are orange with the cutting in black. But I was able to photocopy the designs by setting the scan to fast and copying in black. This way I didn't use up a lot of ink and still had a pattern good enough to cut. The cover design was more difficult to cut then I expected but then I just started doing Scherenschnitte three weeks ago. All this aside the book itself is charming and entertaining and beautifully published. A great coffee table book!
