David Hyde Pierce “steals the show”* as The Perfect Host in this sinister psychological thriller that “piles on the suspense and twists.”** As the always immaculate Warwick Wilson (Hyde Pierce) prepares for his dinner party, he receives an unexpected buzz at his door from John Taylor, a criminal on the run who manages to con his way off the streets and into the festivities. But what John doesn’t realize is that his seemingly straight-laced host is not who he appears to be, and he has a whole night of diabolical fun in store for John.

In this movie he plays a very different role. I do not want to provide any spoilers, but I will say, if you want to see the true acting skills of David Hyde Pierce, watch this movie. I was hooked from the very beginning. An outstanding performance entwined with twists and turns one would never expect. It may seem slow to start, but in order to appreciate the full experience of this performance, one must watch until the very end.
One of the best movies I have seen in quite some time. Enjoy.
The film has an early twist...and a few lesser twists later on, so don't expect to see too much on plot in reviews. We have seen this kind of thing in horror movies, but the delightful soundtrack turned this movie into an excellent dark quirky comedy. I suggest you watch the movie and not read Amazon reviews on this one as they give away too much of the twist.
F-bomb, no sex, no nudity.
He should never have made it it spoiled his image as far as I am concerned.
Warwick is expecting guests for a dinner party of perfectly cooked and presented roast duck with all the most fashionable trimmings. However, it is not long before his inquisitiveness coupled with Taylor's lack of panache start to reveal his true motives. What unfurls is a deliciously dark story of hidden desires, warped minds petulant double crosses and plot twists from plot twist Nirvana.
To say any more is trespassing in the area of plot spoiling so I will desist. This though was just broodingly sinister in places full of dark humour with David Hyde-Pierce acting himself out of the ball park in a bravura performance of the completely over the top, host. There is even a superbly camp dance routine to Rose Royce's seventies disco hit - `Car wash' - marvellous.
As you can tell I ruddy loved this; it insinuates itself into your mind for an illuminating 94 minutes and left me wanting more, it was simply effortlessly brilliant. This is one of those films that had passed me by but is one that should have garnered a whole lot more attention; there is a cameo by Helen Reddy too. So for a gripping, original, funny and supremely dark piece of cinema this one should fit the bill perfectly.
