Product Description

They’re not quite zombies. They’re not quite human. And they’re definitely not how Seffy Schmidt wants to spend her Tuesday.

Persephone has always lived in the shadow of her practically-flawless stepsister Iris, even more so after accidentally shooting Miss Perfect in the chest during a misguided and wine-cooler-soaked turkey hunt. Now the cutting-edge treatment that saved her stepsister’s life -- while somehow making her even more disgustingly amazing -- might be responsible for an outbreak that’s turning the entire population of the Greater Fargo-Moorhead Area into oddly-human zombies.

Armed with nothing more than her wits, a shovel, and memories of her past glory in the realm of high school science fairs, Seffy realizes that she might hold the key to saving her family, her hometown, and maybe even the world.

A funny and different book. You can't help but cheer on Persephone and her cohorts as they endeavor to keep from being infected and I’d be happy to read more of “whatever that was”.

Very hard to put down. The story flows nice so you never feel like there is just too much detail, which can happen a lot for books in this genre I've noticed. Funny and told in a way that has a believability to it, not full of plot holes.
HASH(0x99970b10) out of 5 stars A unique take on zombies that will be appealing for some and too disturbing for others. July 4 2016

I thought this book would probably be on the far side of PG-13 if it were a film. Most of the curse words are replaced by other words. I was hoping there would be more focus on story than violence, and overall I think that was the case. There are deaths, though most of them are not very graphic. People do get injured quite a bit.

Much of the dialogue is very funny, though a small amount of it was surprisingly off-putting (the conversations about the hangers and small children with guns were not funny to me). I liked that the story had its serious moments. The way that different kinds of people reacted to the infected felt genuine as well.
The main character seemed fairly realistic as an intelligent, somewhat insecure teenage girl. One of the supporting characters was very entertaining and endearing.
I thought the author's take on zombies was interesting, and the explanation of the virus that caused it was logical in a slightly futuristic kind of way. The last part of the book felt a little disjointed, and I struggled at times to follow what was happening. There are loose ends left at the end of the book.

I would suggest that any parent looking over this book for their teen focus on the second half of the book. Most of the more disturbing things happen there.

Some people will love this book, some really won't. It all comes down to personal choice. If you would feel okay watching something like the edited version of The Walking Dead, this probably won't be a problem for you.

I really loved this book!! It has a great spin on a zombie Apocalypse and you'll love the ride from beginning to end!! I think Seffy is great as a heroin because she brave, strong, and funny as hell!! I just love Jetta and her faucet !!! I think every one knows someone just like her!! And I think that Iris might have got a bum deal on everyone thinking shes perfect !! I mean even before her "Incident". You will never believe the cause, You'll meet a couple of butts , and you'll never believe what some people will do just to save some lives!! You'll love this book and beg for another!!

I purchased this book because I have really enjoyed the first 2 books in the "After The Fires Went Out" series, even though zombies aren't usually my thing.

Persephone doesn't disappoint and I really liked the realistic technological aspects the author brings to his books. My only thought was I wasn't the biggest fan on how the zombies evolved thru the book, but that could be that I'm just not a zombie person.

I was given the opportunity to read this for free in exchange for an honest review from

First, let me say that I am BIG on the zombie genre. This story had a unique and funny twist to it. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and hope to get the chance to read the next story. It flows very well and is smart, without being too bogged down with details.

A very enjoyable read.
