Best Designed Pet Crate

This is our second pet crate of this model. The best thing about it is it has a door in the top which makes it easy to load your squirming, writhing pet into it. If you've ever tried to cram a recalcitrant cat (or other animal -- raccoon, possum, you name it) into a carrier through the front opening, you'll know what I mean. Trust me, it's a lot easier to get them in and out the top door. In addition, this crate is sturdy and easy to clean. Your pet won't be able to tip it over, the way they can soft carriers. If they make a mess inside, just hose it down. I recommend using an old hand towel and a potty pad for comfort on the inside, but those are super-easy to clean, too: toss the pad and launder the towel. I've worked with cats and small wildlife for 40 years; this is the only model I highly recommend.

I can actually get my cat into this thing

After a few major struggles to get my cat into his old carrier, the vet suggested I buy something larger that has a top gate in addition to the one on the front. This carrier is great, as my cat hates traveling but we recently moved so he needed to go to my parents house during open houses and moving. I couldn't have gotten him into the old one after the last battle (I wore heavy work gloves, took apart the old carrier, and the vet helped wrap the cat in a towel, then built the carrier around him because he was not going in through the door), and so far he's gotten in this one willingly a couple times and been dropped in through the top the times he's less willing. It's saved me a lot of trouble (plus bites/scratches) so far!

I bought this for my cat. He is a rescued large pure black cat and I called him Jinx since everyone thinks black cats are bad luck. Which is a shame because then it is difficult to find a home for them!...I do travel so at times he has to be Boarded and he is a bit of a jerk to get into a crate...lol...however the top door on the lid of the crate makes it very easy to pop him in without too much stress for him or I. It is very sturdy as he is a big boy. I am very pleased with it and he must be too because he didn't vomit in it...yet!...lol...

I love this style pet carrier. Especially the two doors for travelling with my cats. (The two doors make it easy for vet visits) I have this 24 inch and one the size smaller. It feels durable and could take a beating if thrown around. My cats feel a lot comfier in this style carriers the the cloth ones. Its stable in the vehicle and doesn't move around or allow them to move. Putting it together is simple and pretty much needs no instructions as long as you have common sense. Mine needed a slight modification. The holes to line up the top half and bottom half didn't get fully punched out but it was a quick fix and only took a quick 5 min to get it together instead of the 2 it took me with my other one.

My youngest cat actually prefers to sleep inside the carrier then her soft bed 2 feet away from it.

My cat managed to hulk his way out of, and consequently, break, two different soft sided zippered carriers. I needed something a little sturdier to contain my beastie. This definitely does the job - He can't get out while I'm driving the car at highway speeds anymore. It's relatively easy to get the cat into it, as you can either go from the top or the gate at the front.

Apart from that it's pretty heavy and awkward to store. Weirdly, the cat likes to sleep in it when he's not being forced inside for a vet visit. I bought a separate cushion for the bottom, so maybe this is why. I'd say it's slightly on the large size for my 14 lb cat, but hey, we're erring on the side of caution in case he ever gets fat.

Best carrier that I’ve ever bought on sale! My 17 pound kitty fits in it comfortably & he’s a long kitty! LoL. The top door is well built and doesn’t feel like it’s going to pop open when carrying around a 17 pound kitty. In fact the whole carrier is well built. Not a big fan of brown but the carrier is beautiful. I bought this in replacement of the cheap AmazonBasics 2 door pet carrier & I’m glad I did. The trick is just finding a place to stow it as it’s put together with bolts & not by snap closures but no complaints there from me.

This kennel has been great so far for our tiny Pomeranian puppy (1.5lbs). She has plenty of room to move around inside. I love the top opening as it makes putting her in and taking her out so much easier than using the front door. It also looks quite nice and comes with a bunch of extra fasteners in case any of them break. Just be cautious if your dog has a tiny mouth. Our puppy got her little face stuck in the door for a minute. She was fine, and has not done it since, but it’s something to be aware of.

I used this carrier for the first time yesterday. We had an appointment to have our cat looked at, so he went into the carrier and we carried him to the car. When we reached the car, we noticed that his nose was bleeding and there was skin hanging down from it. Upon inspection, we noticed that he had scraped the entire first layer of skin off his nose when sticking his nose through one of the oval-shaped air holes on the side of the kennel. I am very disappointed and honestly, shocked that a cat carrier would do this to an animal. When I inspected further, I noticed that the holes were in fact very sharp and dangerous. Unfortunately, we can no longer use this carrier because it puts our cats in a position in which they could be badly hurt. I am hoping this will not happen to any other animals.

This is an American built carrier, at the time of writing, the number one best selling pet carrier on the Amazon USA site. Since it doesn't seem that wildly available in the UK I was delighted that Amazon UK stocked it. Do take a look at the couple of thousand Amazon USA reviews before making up your mind up about this carrier.

My history: The door hinge broke on my old 22" cat carrier and for reasons of storage space I tried to downsize to the Amazon Basics 19" carrier, in theory only 3" smaller, but which proved to be far too small for an adult cat. So back in the market for something larger, I hunted around till I found this one. It's a roomy transporter, but not heavy in my opinion, so large you could probably fit two friendly cats together in this! I've come to the conclusion that cat carriers are either too small for comfort or unnecessarily large for the average moggie...

Overall this Petmate carrier has a good quality feel to it, the plastic seems rugged enough and I like that the top and bottom fit together with 9 screws + bolts (I was provided with plenty of spares). You can certainly take the top and bottom apart for storage, but it would be a faff in my opinion, but the option is there.

The front door and in particular the upper hatch feel well constructed, and I see it as a positive that the locking mechanism for each require two fingers to open as you are required to squeeze a pair of dual sprung handles together to unlock. For this reason there is little chance of either opening accidentally, say if the carrier was accidentally dropped.

In summary: a roomy, well built carrier with secure locks. Recommended.

I Have Just One Problem With It

Overall this is a good strong carrier pretty heavy which can be a bit difficult is you have to walk far with it but the thing I find most annoying is that the top opening lid does not stay open when putting the cat in or taking it out and slams shut every time ( which is not only annoying but frightens a nervous cat ) so you have to sort of hold it open with your arm while putting the cat in and out if this could be improved to actually stay open it would make life a lot easier when going to the vets !

My 9 month old kitten managed to chew his way out of his first carrier which was a fabric/mesh bag style. So I decided to look for something more sturdy. I did lots of research and this one seemed to have the best reviews. I'm really pleased I spent a bit more. He does not like to be in the car at all but was a little more content in this one than his previous one. The fastenings seem strong enough. I doubt he'll be able to open it, despite his determination! The top opening is useful to be able to get him out more easily when at the vets (he can't hide at that back!). He is also a very big cat (bigger than some adult cats already) so the large size of this one was appealing - although storing it is more difficult! Only used a couple of times but so far so good!
