About the Author

American novelist Louisa May Alcott is best known for her classic coming-of-age novel Little Women, and its sequels Little Men and Jo s Boys. The daughter of noted transcendentalist and educator Amos Bronson Alcott and Abigail May Alcott, Alcott was an active abolitionist and feminist, and the first woman registered to vote in Concord, Massachusetts. Schooled mainly by her father, Alcott and her three sisters also received lessons from such notables as Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Margaret Fuller. Alcott penned her first book, Flower Fables, for Emerson s daughter, Ellen. Before gaining critical success for her children s fiction, Alcott wrote several passionate adult novels using the pen name A. M. Barnard, including A Long Fatal Love Chase and Punishment. Alcott s literary career spanned more than 40 years, and she wrote more than 30 books before her death in 1888.

HASH(0xa15cff30) out of 5 stars Dated but nonetheless touching June 19 2012
By MamaSylvia - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
eBook downloaded free from Gutenberg. Short collection of short pieces, set during the Civil War. Besides the title piece, The King of Clubs and the Queen of Hearts, The Cross On the Old Church Tower, and The Death of John (labelled a true story) are included.

Although quite dated, this collection will remind the reader of Alcott's skill at tearjerkers. The Death of John seems to be an expanded version of a story included in Hospital Sketches. Keep a box of kleenex handy when reading this! Spelling and grammar were acceptable, formatting was occasionally a little wonky but not to the point that it distracted me from the story.

On Picket Duty and Other Tales consists of 4 short stories - On Picket Day, The King of Clubs & The Queen of Hearts, The Cross on the Old Church Tower, and The Death of John (an excerpt from Hospital Sketches). Each story has its own little moral to it and is interesting on its own, but there was no overarching theme.

On Picket Duty was the best of the short stories in this book. I find it interesting to read the stroies of authers who lived much closer to the historical events about which they are writing than we are.

HASH(0xa15d1174) out of 5 stars Short storys Jan. 30 2013

3 short stories, one of which is a republishing of part of hospital sketches. The main soldier in each story dies. Luckily for the most part not as preachy as some of her other works.
