“[Ree Drummond is] funny, enthusiastic and self-deprecating, making the book appeal to pavement-pounders and pioneer types alike [with] recipes like steak with whiskey cream sauce, leek and potato pizza and pico de gallo. As a portrait of a real American family kitchen, it works.” (New York Times)

“Drummond invites fans into her world with irresistible recipes and photos…. Here’s a mom of four who can turn out a Perfect Pot Roast and make feasts for girlfriends that start with sangria and finish with crème brûlée. It’s sweet and seductive: You’ll want to plunge right in.” (People)

“Jokey and irresistible. Drummond’s…appreciation for something as simple as well-made pico de gallo is infectious. Such attentiveness to basic cooking skills makes the book entertaining and useful.” (New York Times Gift Guide)

“Who needs Julia Child? I’ve got Pioneer Woman.” (Baltimore Sun)

“Drummond’s writing style is closer to a good friend dishing out advice than an expert telling people want to do.” (Denver Daily News)

“[Ree Drummond] whips up mouthwatering meals with easy-to-find ingredients (she’s miles away from restaurants and supermarkets) and shares what living in a not-so-little house on the prairie is really all about. ” (People)

From the Back Cover

My name is Ree.

Some folks know me as The Pioneer Woman.

After years of living in Los Angeles, I made a pit stop in my hometown in Oklahoma on the way to a new, exciting life in Chicago. It was during my stay at home that I met Marlboro Man, a mysterious cowboy with steely blue eyes and a muscular, work-honed body. A strict vegetarian, I fell hard and fast, and before I knew it we were married and living on his ranch in the middle of nowhere, taking care of animals, and managing a brood of four young children. I had no idea how I'd wound up there, but I knew it was exactly where I belonged.

The Pioneer Woman Cooks is a homespun collection of photography, rural stories, and scrumptious recipes that have defined my experience in the country. I share many of the delicious cowboy-tested recipes I've learned to make during my years as an accidental ranch wife—including Rib-Eye Steak with Whiskey Cream Sauce, Lasagna, Fried Chicken, Patsy's Blackberry Cobbler, and Cinnamon Rolls—not to mention several "cowgirl-friendly" dishes, such as Sherried Tomato Soup, Olive Cheese Bread, and Crème Brûlée. I show my recipes in full color, step-by-step detail, so it's as easy as pie to follow along.

You'll also find colorful images of rural life: cows, horses, country kids, and plenty of chaps-wearing cowboys.

I hope you get a kick out of this book of mine. I hope it makes you smile. I hope the recipes bring you recognition, accolades, and marriage proposals. And I hope it encourages even the most harried urban cook to slow down, relish the joys of family, nature, and great food, and enjoy life.

I am a fan of the author's blog, which is a wonderful resource. Ree Drummond writes her blog with a huge amount of tongue-in-cheek humour and great photos that follow each step of each recipe. One could not possibly go wrong following one of her recipes. Her first cookbook is written much in the same way....with a good amount of humour, wonderful photos (the author is also the photographer), and great recipes that are a blend of country style, ethnic and other mixes. That Ms. Drummond is smitten with her ranch life, her Marlboro man and her kids is obvious, both in the cookbook and on her blog. If you are looking for a cookbook that contains only recipes, you may just be disappointed in this book. However, if you are looking to experience an adventure whilst looking for a perfect recipe, you'll love this book.

I never heard of The Pioneer Woman before buying this book. But now I am a big fan. I love the recipes in this cookbook although I remain somewhat baffled by a "sheet cake", maybe it is a southern States thing. Everything I have made and I have made quite a bit my entire family loved, loved, loved. They do usually eat like pigs but they don't always love, love, love everything I make :D Some of my new standbys have become jalapeno poppers and hot artichoke dip and prune cake and ...
I also am now enjoying her blog - where she has recipes, photography tips, etc. Sometimes she can make me laugh so hard at the computer I just have tears streaming down my face.
This book and her blog are just great!

I have been an avid follower of Pioneer Woman's blog for the past couple of years, and I can now say that I am an avid fan of her cookbook. I love how she showcases each recipe with full-colour, step-by-step detail making it easy to follow along. Her style of cooking is all about slowing down, relishing the joys of family, nature, great food and enjoying life. Now that's what I'm talking about.

I really regret buying this book. It is not so much a cookbook as a photo album, and many of the recipes have errors. The chicken pot pie recipe calls for one cup of flour. This is clearly an error, as I checked her blog and she surreptitiously changed the amount to 1/4 cup after people pointed out the error. However, she did not acknowledge the mistake. I don't think she's very authentic - I have tried several of her recipes and they all required adjustments to avoid disaster.

Mad at myself for wasting money on this cookbook. I found the recipes over simplistic ... really, eggs in a hole?? ... and I found nothing new or exciting about the recipes. Most of the recipes can be found on her website, I wish she would have added more new recipes to the collection and did away with a lot of the pictures, then maybe it would have been worth buying. I buy cookbooks for the recipes, not for the photography. If I want photographs of non-recipe related items then I buy a book for that and not for recipes. I think she missed the mark. I went to the local used book store and found several copies of the cookbook for much cheaper .... obviously others are not thrilled with it either.

I purchased this book a while ago and I've only tried a few of the recipes so far but I have liked them. I always use Drummond's chili recipe now, and I've tried the prune cake and it was a huge hit with the family. People couldn't stop telling me how moist the cake was.

I know some people have said that many of her recipes are too simple to be in a cook book, but I think this would be a great book for a beginning cook, or someone who wanted to try some different versions of the old standards. I love the pictures as well, and the step-by-step illustrations are great. New cooks really benefit from seeing "what it should look like".
