It is so nice to know that I'm not the only person who loves the Pirate Movie starring Kristy McNichol and Christopher Atkins! I know the critics totally trashed this movie in their reviews, but I thought it was such a nice, cute funny, movie, I loved the tounge-in-cheek humor of it which I guess some people just didn't get, and I loved the admittedly corny but cute bouncy peppy and catchy songs and the beautiful scenes of the Australian coast and reefs and caves. Kristy McNichol was adorable in this movie, her character Mabel was so sweet and innocent! I first watched this movie when I was a teenager and I watched it with my niece and nephew and they loved it too and we watched it each time it was shown on HBO. I will most definitely be adding this movie to my video collection and I hope to get a DVD player someday and would love to have this movie on DVD more so then a video tape.

having never seen this film in early eighties either on tv or cable, i can't honestly say that i had the pirate movie fever back then like so many reviewers here. however,i recently discovered this almost forgotten little gem in a used videocassette bin at a local video store and i love it! kristy mcnichol looks awfully familiar to me but i can't remember exactly what films she has done or which tv shows although i do remember her face. ms. mcnichol gives a solid performance as a young girl who has fantasies of falling in love with a young ex-pirate played by christpher atkins. the pirate movie is a sugary sweet, hilarious, and somewhat campy remake of the pirates of penzance. the pirate movie also is successful in combining elements of romance, action, and fantasy on top of great musical numbers which few movies have managed to do. probability suggests that all the moviegoers who adored grease most likely would fall head over heels for this film. this film boasts several songs from the original pirates of penzance as well as some eighties pop rock love songs so i believe the film could appeal to both adults and children. this is one film the whole family could watch together and enjoy. you might want to bid on this one as it's becoming rare and hard to find these days.

I first saw this movie in 1982...when I was a teeneger! This movie is so unique...and funny! It has a mix of everything (drama, comedy, adventure) and a very good plot! I bought this video a few years ago...it is on my top 25 movie list. The plot...a boy (Frederick) falls in love with a girl (Mable), and wants to marry her...but he is a 'good' pirate. The girl has several other sisters, and the rest of the pirates try to capture them. Their father- a Major General- performs a song and dance to appease the pirate king. The king agrees to spare them, but goes back on his word, and a sword fight between Frederick and the Pirate King starts (careful, you might cut yourself...as they stop to have a drink during the fight). It's kind of a quirky movie, but if you like spoof movies (like The Naked Gun or Hot Shots)...it is a must! I won't tell you how this one ends...you'll just have to see for yourself. The songs are a spoof on another movie- The Pirates. I don't know if I'd totally call this a spoof movie...more like a "unique, humorous, spoofy, musical. My sister asked for this movie for Christmas...I think my whole family found this an entertaining feature. Enjoy the popcorn...light's out.

It is quite possible that The Pirate Movie can be singled out as the WORST movie ever made, but I don't care that it's a bad movie. Bad movies are usually a lot of fun and this one certainly is. Maybe it's pure nostalgia, maybe it's because I love Australian movies and maybe it's because there is nothing here that can offend anyone, unless the fact that Kristy McNichol spends most of the movie scantily clad offends you. (as it certainly doesn't offend me!!) Australian acting legend Bill Kerr is great as the Major General, and his line "I'm older than the Beatles but I'm younger than the Rolling Stones" always has me laughing. Ted Hamilton's turn as the Pirate King also deserves praise, who after ripping the sails as he desends them holding nothing but a dagger, turns to his put upon mistress and says "sew that up love!" giving the audience another throw away but very effective gag. As for the music, the film gives us a great mix of Gilbert & Sullivan standards and 80's pop music, obviously the producers had a mind to appeal to older people as well as the ghetto blaster generation. Get a copy of this now, your kid's will love it, and you might have a chuckle or two yourself.

A Yes a Wonderful-Delightful "1982" Pirate Musical (Not made very often now a days Having the Pleasure of a Pirate singing that is) Ultimate Musical Comedy Pirate Adventure full of Maidens and Savage Swordplay +Buried Treasure +plenty of pillaging, plundering , Plank Walking Fun and Amusement + the Extra Bonuses lots of ("Bare Chested"-Shirtless Cutthroats (Pirates) Christopher Atkins being one of those Hot Looking Pirates Shirtless (Mind you it was after he had Made the Original Blue Lagoon).

Not Sure what the Reviews were given when it was in Theatres but when I saw it originally on TV I very much liked it a lot.
