Product Description

The world of CARS takes flight in PLANES, Disney's high-flying animated comedy revved up with action and adventure. Join Dusty, a crop duster with sky-high dreams and a once-in-a-lifetime chance to take on the world's fastest flyers in the greatest air race ever. Dusty has a huge heart but two big problems... he's not exactly built for speed, plus he's afraid of heights. His courage is put to the ultimate test as this unlikely hero aims higher than he ever imagined. With a little help from his friends, Dusty finds the courage to be more than he was built for and the inspiration to soar.

I didn't have high expectations when I went to see this film. The newspaper reviews were indifferent- a quick "Cars" knockoff to keep Disney's cashflow up.

But I was very pleasantly surprised. The story was a bit predictable - "local boy makes good", the crusty old codger who eventually warms up and helps the kids, etc- but I'd say it worked pretty well.

I know enough about historical aircraft- and aircraft in general- that I appreciated the different planes that were shown in the movie. Thought there were some really interesting choices- the DH88 for example, voiced by John Cleese, the Corsair, by Stacy Keach, and of course a Gee Bee racer, by Carlos Alazraqui. There were enough 'in-jokes' that I was laughing out loud (but according to the kids, I was the only adult laughing...)

I also remember Dusty and Ishani, flying near the Taj Mahal and observing graceful glider- like birds.... lovely image, clever replacement of animals from the "Planes" world to replicate nature.

Had this film come out BEFORE "Cars", I can't help but think it would have got a lot of praise for its animation, technical references, and possibly even its plot. Is it a bit too derivative of "Cars"? Maybe, but "Cars" was a difficult film to top- look at the reviews its sequel got.

As a film for kids- and adults with an interest- I'd give it 4 stars.

VIDEO (3D):

Planes from Pixar/Disney flew onto blu ray with MPEG-4 MVC 1080p 1.78:1 encode. This digital 3D picture is superb, with a naturally dimensional appearance that enhances the sense of depth and perspective. The dimensional quality plays well to define the various positions of the planes during the race. The occasional negative parallax out-of-screen instances enhance the thrills. The colours are bold and vibrant. Contrast is excellent, with bold blacks and delineated shadows. Resolution is excellent and fine detail is exhibited throughout. This is an engaging and fun 3D experience that will thrill the entire family. (5/5)

VIDEO (2D):

Planes from Pixar/Disney flew onto blu ray with MPEG-4 AVC 1080p 1.78:1 encode. The transfer is pristine, with striking details and crisp edges. Colours are bright and vibrant, bathed in convincing light and shadow. Planes, being a spinoff from the beloved Cars series, may not be the prettiest Pixar sequel or spin-off, but it holds its own beautifully. (4.5/5)

AUDIO:

Planes has a DTS-HD 7.1 Master Audio lossless track. Dialogue is crystal clear and perfectly prioritized. Bass is adequate with every engine chug and roar, propeller drone, and dive-bomb attack, making the most of the adventure's every racing sequence. Racers zoom seamlessly from one channel to the next, with the soundfield suitably enveloping. This is an adequate soundtrack, but not outstanding. (4.5/5)

TRIVIA:

Planes has an estimated budget of $50 million, but was a complete disappointment at the box office, grossing only around $90 million, which is far less than $549 million (Cars 2) and $454 million (Cars 1).

PACKAGING:

There is no 3D lenticular cover.

Planes on blu-ray is worth a look for the stunning visuals alone. Sadly, much of what composes the rest of the movie is mediocre, from the dialogue, to the vocal performances, and even the choice in songs. This film lacks the ability to engage the viewer, and often feels forced in a far too simplistic way. (Instead of celebrity voices, perhaps true vocal talent artists may have offered an improvement, but still the dialogue is perhaps too basic to salvage.) Given other titles by Pixar / Disney (and the quality of other animated features in general), this effort is surprisingly rudimentary, yet might well appeal to children of a young age. Adults on the other hand may quickly lose interest, accept for the global variety of gorgeous landscape artwork. Additionally, as bonus material, there are several worthy featurettes on planes (models and history).

We thought we ordered the DVD too late for Christmas but to our delight it arrived just in time for us to wrap it and place it beneath the tree. When our 4 year old grandson opened it he jumped to his feet, raised it in the air and shook and shouted with delight! To me it was reminiscent of (many years ago) watching Gretsky (I am a grandparent) skate around the arena while sporting the Stanley Cup above his head! You just had to be there!!

I got this on sale cheaper than most other movies like Monster's Inc. that have been out for years, even though Planes only just came out on disc.

It came fast, and also, blu-ray and dvd combos are awesome, so we can have a dvd for the car's dvd player and a blu-ray for when we're at home! Also, if your kid wrecks a disc when you're not paying attention for five seconds you still have at least one other copy of the movie!

This is an awesome movie. I love the graphics. Made to the same high standards that all Pixar movies seem to be made . It may have had more punch if it had been made before Cars 2. It has a similar plot to Cars 2 but in the air. There are some great characters. It is fun watching. Each time you watch it you see something going on in the background that you maybe didn't see before.
