HASH(0xa5d9fa98) out of 5 stars In the Beginning Was the Word... Aug. 22 2011

In "The Platonic Myths", author Josef Pieper uses Plato's dialogues as a vehicle for examining the idea that certain myths date from the beginning of man's experience on earth, and, however incompletely, provide a lingering picture of man's moral creation and his relationship to justice in this life and in an afterlife. This symbolic truth is portrayed as part of man's interaction with a creator who is outside the realm of rationalism and not subject to scientific proof.

Pieper's thesis is closely argued. Knowledge of Plato's dialogues is certainly helpful but not absolutely necessary to follow his line of reasoning. A knowledge of Christian theology is also helpful. Pieper frames his conclusion in explicitly Christian theological terms, although it would likely be intelligable in other religious frameworks.

"The Platonic Myths" is a short but challenging thought piece about truth, presented with an excellent introduction by James Schall, and highly recommended.
