The twist-on munchkin was the best.
Dollar Tree version was too stiff and had a snap-on lid. Munchkin does a great job of soft, flexible silicon openings. If you don't a a ninja baby like ours who pries every snap-on lid off with her teeth, the snap-on lid snack catcher is great. Because of our little lid biter, we needed a twist top.
Playtex was stiffer, and cheerios fall through the openings. The swiveling lid is a great idea, but it just doesn't snap on that well on the bottom or the top. You have to get it in just the right spot and it's not that sturdy. Plus, our little one pulled the lid off its swivel post every time we gave it to her.
The munchkin 2 piece snack catcher with stay put lid was the best of those that we tried. Soft, flexible silicon opening and twist-on lid so she can't bite it off.
I'm just a regular mom who paid full price for all these items and wanted to review them so you don't have to buy all of them too. No products were discounted or given to me in exchange for this review.
Cue the next morning where I give my 14 month old some Cheerios in the freshly washed cup. 3 minutes later, he has scattered Cheerios all over the floor because they are too small and fall through the slots in the lid. They don't all fall out at once, and it takes a little shaking, but he is a shaker and a mover, so I now have Cheerios scattered through my entire house instead of in just one pile. D'oh!!!
I'm sure this would be fine for larger things like goldfish or crackers, but his favorite snack is Cheerios so that's a deal breaker for us. Why didn't the manufacturer test this out ahead of time? Seems like that is a fairly common snack. Grrrr, back to the drawing board.
From my perspective, these are really great. Realistically, it's not possible to avoid a mess when using these. There are slits where food and crumbs can fall out and even if they held food perfectly a toddler would find a way to make a mess with them. I am surprised with how well they work, but do not buy these if you think they are going to be mess-free! If anything they can sometimes make the mess harder to clean - now instead of having a pile of cheerios in the living room you'll have a cheerio in the hall, a few in the bathroom, one in the bedroom, a few in the nursery, and somehow one ended up in the closet! I don't mind using these at our place because we expect to find crumbs, stains, and random bits of food around the floor (that's why we have a vacuum!). When we go over to grandpa and grandma's, this does not come with us.
As far as material and construction, these are excellent. They clean up nicely and look new after many washes. With the low price they seem almost disposable but they can be used over and over. The solid lid seems kind of pointless as our daughter figured out how to pull that off right away. The slit-top lid works pretty well at keeping most snacks in the container though.
Bottom line: Very worth the money. These are not perfect, but I don't see how they could be improved with toddlers being as messy as they are. These are great for travel or allowing your little one to carry their snack around home. Don't take them to relatives' homes though as they will still make a mess!
Also want to add that I chose this one over some others since it has a top that goes on it. Cheerios and a few other things that I have tried in the container do stay fresh for the say but usually by day two aren't not crunchy anymore so that nix's it as a travel container for weekend trips but I am hopeful it'll help in the months to come with little trails around my house - especially with animals that'll take it upon themselves to clean those right up!
