There are reports that state fully 50% of scientific studies cannot be replicated by peers & even in some cases 75%. Science has become so driven by politics & the need to justify funding it is losing it's once great name.
Dr. Susan Crockford has written a detailed book showing just how the popularity of the polar bear was hijacked by scientists to justify additional funding and drive the climate change agenda. Dr. Crockford was vilified by these same scientists because she challenged their science and of course their funding.
Reduced arctic ice has no affect on the ability of Polar Bears to survive.
It is just mind-boggling the malfeasance & corruption of scientists Ian Stirling & Steven Amstrup knowingly falsifying data all for securing additional funding.
Another interesting fact from the book is the Inuit of Nunavut have banned scientist & their polar beer studies over concerns their methods of research are destructive & cruel. One method of putting a tracking collar on a young bear, as it grows chokes to death or gets it head trapped. Polar bear necks are bigger than their head so the collars must be put on tight. If they fail to find the young bear again and remove the collar the bear slowly chokes to death.
The Inuit know polar bear populations better than the scientists. They have long opposed their testing methods. Scientists must do these studies or funding and pay checks dry up. Of course the Inuit are not scientists & are thus ignorant.
Polar bears are now so populous in the arctic that the Inuit communities are threatened by the their numbers.
An honest and enlightening book that shows just how false science is being used for political & funding reasons.

The Polar Bear Catastrophe That Never Happened explains why the catastrophic decline in polar bear numbers we were promised in 2007 failed to materialize. It’s the story of how and why the polar bear came to be considered 'Threatened' with extinction, and tracks its rise and fall as an icon of the global warming movement. The book also tells the story of Crockford’s role in bringing that failure to public attention and the backlash against her that ensued – and why, among all others who have attempted to do so previously, she was uniquely positioned to do so. In general, this is a cautionary tale of scientific hubris and of scientific failure, of researchers staking their careers on untested computer simulations and later obfuscating inconvenient facts. For the first time, you'll see a frank and detailed account of attempts by scientists to conceal population growth as numbers rose from an historical low in the 1960s to the astonishing highs that surely must exist after almost 50 years of protection from overhunting. There is also a blunt account of what truly abundant populations of bears mean for the millions of people who live and work in areas of the Arctic inhabited by polar bears.

Dr Susan Crockford has presented a detailed review of the polar bear, its habitudes and history, current status and future outlook. She has documented the resilience of the polar bear in surviving climate change during the last 10,000 years. The biggest threat to the polar bear during the 19th and 20th centuries was unregulated hunting by man. She has a thorough knowledge of the Arctic, its geography, and food progression from fauna to seal to polar bear, and the numerous techniques in estimating polar bear numbers, currently at the official estimate of 26,500.
Dr Crockford points out the amazing physical prowess of the polar bear which enables it to overcome a lower percentage of ice cover during its usual hunting season. Long distance swimming and diving for up to 5 minute are common. Thick ice with and heavy snow cover presents more of a problem to the polar bear as well as its prey, than a large percentage of open water.
The polar bear had been adopted as the icon by the climate alarmist groups, but is now falling out of favour as it has demonstrated that it is able to withstand the current low level of climate change.

I bought this book to learn why environmentalists had their hair on fire over polar bears.
Very enlightening reading.

Catalogs how the author, a polar bear expert, dared to disagree based on facts AND the 'on-the ground' observations of the local Inuit, with the politically-correct dogma that polar bears are NOT at all in dire straits, and are in fact thriving.

Although there was repetition, and bearing in mind(no pun intended) that the base for polar bear populations was somewhat of an unknown quantity, the author(ess?) was able to demonstrate despite lowered ice levels at various times, and in various places, there was no effect on polar bear populations; as by and large they increased. Polar bears as an icon for climate activists did not stand up to scrutiny in much the same way as the now infamous hockey stick. A VERY impressive list of references.

she backed her arguements with references and did not just repeat what the majority say. not afraid to disagree with the doom and gloom group.

Well written and wonderfully developed educational book. So interesting - I was amazed at how little I know about polar bears and the North. In this day of alarmist science re climate change and species extinction it was very reassuring to get some balanced and rigorous information. Thank you Dr. Crockford. PS I have given 2 as presents and already loaned mine out!

My background is not particularly high level, goes more sideways over Chemistry, Geology and Physical Geography through College and University. I'm proud to say that my outlook is conservative and doubly proud to consider myself a science Sceptic.
i love it that Susan has become one of the more important deflators of scientific rubbish thrown around by the Greenies.

A Masterpiece Upending Previous "Research" on Polar Bears
Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2019Verified Purchase
The author is a biologist who has studied polar bears for many years. She has determined that spring is the most important season for them, since their main source of food for the entire year is seal pups. The previous understanding, mainly supported by a US and Canadian researcher, was that summer was important and the melting of ice in the summer imperils polar bears by forcing them to swim long distances in hunting food. Ms. Crockford shows that more than half of the annual food requirements are obtained in the spring. Warmer temperatures in the Arctic allows more seals to give birth in areas that provide good hunting for bears, so a warmer Arctic climate should allow polar bears to thrive and gain in numbers. In fact, Crockford shows that exactly that has occurred in most of the 17 or so subpopulations of polar bears over the last two decades, with the total number now in the range of 30,000, compared to the estimates of less than 10,000 before the hunting restrictions were enforced several decades ago. A powerful argument, well supported by the many studies cited. A true success story attributable in part to climate change.

Proper analysis of reality
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 29, 2020Verified Purchase
Dr Crockford's detailed, thoroughly well researched and documented and referenced analysis is another triumph of why science trumps prejudiced activism every time.
Sadly the AGW proponents just don't like the real world when it doesn't accord with their hand-wringing alarmism.
Anyone who calls this nonsense out for what it is is subject to vitriolic attack over and over again. Dr Crockford, Dr Mitch Taylor, Professor Peter Ridd, Dr Tim Ball, Professor Pat Michaels...this list goes on and on.
What a sorry state of affairs this has all become.
Well done to all those who keep pursuing the science and the data.

On the importance of testing hypotheses in science
Reviewed in Germany on May 3, 2019Verified Purchase
Interesting and informative book on how polar bears got listed as 'endangered' on the basis of grim predictions. The chosen timeline of 'mid twenty-first century' did not lead to the predictions being exempt from testing for many decades. Instead, the critical conditions were present earlier than thought. Hence, falsification was possible and, in fact, happened. Summer sea ice extent turns out not to be a critical survival factor for polar bears. The book also sheds light on how this 'inconvenient truth' was dealt with by the interested scientists and activist: by going after the messenger! Highly recommended case study in the politicization of science.

A must read for climate catastrophe alarmists
Reviewed in Australia on January 15, 2020Verified Purchase
I took the word idiots out of the headline because its probably too apt. A larmists probably wont read this book because it put the lie to all we keep being told about the extinction of polar bears and how they are actually thriving. It is strange however that we seldom hear these days how the poster child - the polar bear - is being left out of global warming ravings. This is a detailed view of the populations and widespread growth of Polar bears .Excellent reading.

Great news for polar bears and for better science
Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2019Verified Purchase
This book convincingly, in clear language, and with robust science demonstrates that the polar bear population has most likely risen from 10,000 to 40,000 in recent decades, despite big decreases in Arctic summer ice (read the book to find out why science shows that the summer ice decrease doesn’t harm polar bears). The discussions of the polar bear role as a now-failed symbol of impending extinction from climate change, of biased press coverage and fake news, of the use of invalid climate models, of the hostility and dishonesty of some polar bear experts getting a new lease on life from the flow of money to climate alarmists, and of the fraudulent listing of the polar bear as a "threatened" species through the machinations of a top government scientist are additional reasons to buy the book. The vicious and dishonest attacks on her by climate alarmists are revealing and scary. Their deliberate falsifications and other methods of distorting or suppressing inconvenient data alone make this book belong in any library on scientific fraud compared to honest scientific method. Buy it, read it, give copies to friends, and donate copies to students willing to learn about the real world of climate science.
