Product Description

It ends with the beginning. This legendary, indie, cult-favorite series ends its tale with the story of the Poughkeepsie brotherhood before the tattoo. Before the train station, before the church, before a criminal empire, there was a foster home and three teen boys who weren't related by blood. But damn if they aren't closer than most blood families by their choice.

Still in high school, Beckett is already laying the groundwork for a grander life ahead, one where his brothers want for nothing and get some respect for once. But even as he plans, Beckett must decide if he’s ready to make that choice—diving into a life that trades his chance at a future, his chance at something as simple as first love with a girl named Candy Cox, for the chance for his brothers to find happiness.

Blake, Beckett, and Cole’s devotion to each other is forged by fists and the driving need to belong somewhere, to do more than just survive this life. Readers of the series know they each get there in the end, but before we count smiles, we must first shed tears. These early days of the Poughkeepsie brotherhood will play on your heartstrings before serrating them with a knife; they’ll lift your soul with music, only to leave you with nothing but a desperate prayer for hope.

And when you reach the end of the beginning, you’ll be ready to start the series all over again.

It all finishes with the beginning. This was great book and a beautiful heartbreaking finish to this series.

If you read the series first this book will give you heart breaking closure and insight into the well loved characters. If your reading this first, you get the boys at their beginning. You get the reasons why and how they become who they are. Either way it hurts your heart.

This was a great read and a great conclusion to the series for me but it wasn't my favorite in the series so I can't give it five but I think four is too low so 4.5.

This story made me aww, swoon, cringe, cry and fall in love. I adore a tale about friendship/brotherhood even more than a romance (this has both). I also can't get enough when the characters are survivors of hell yet still possess good hearts. Poughkeepsie Begins has everything I want and need in a book.

Blake, Beckett and Cole come from terrible backgrounds. Many heartbreaking details are given. In a world trying to swallow them up, they find a safe harbor in each other.

Beckett is also at a crossroads in his life. He can try to hang his everything on the chance of first love, or he can follow a dark path into a world of big payouts and big consequences.

I highly recommend this read. The plot felt authentic, no eye rolling moments. I experienced the strength and pain soul deep. I also gave several smiles to Beckett's charm. It pulled all my heartstrings and left me wanting more. The storyline is beautiful, ugly, sad and uplifting all in one go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful! Nov. 21 2015

Words are not enough to describe how I feel, but here we go. I am still picking up the pieces of my shattered heart. Thank you for that Debra.
The 'Poughkeepsie Brotherhood series' has a special place in my heart. It's a beautiful story about unconditional love and the sacrifices we are willing to make for our family. If you haven't met Blake, Cole and Beckett I suggest you one-click the series NOW! You are missing a lot!

If you already read the series, then you just can't miss this. Debra never disappoints. Her writing is poetic and you really feel part of the story. You connect with them immediately. Believe me you won't put this baby down until you finish it.

Get ready! Buy some kleenex, ice cream and your favorite drink. The roller coaster of emotions won't be easy. Meeting Blake, Cole and Beckett when they were teenagers will make you love them more and at the same time your heart will break for them. You will cry and laugh. But the most important thing is you will experience how they've got each other's back from the very beginning!

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 Beginning Stars!!! Nov. 22 2015
By Ms.Meesh - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Every story has a beginning and so Debra Anastasia takes her readers where it all began. The beginning of the Poughkeepsie Brotherhood series where the lives of Beckett, Blake and Cole are intertwined with one another in more ways than one. In this prequel novella, Poughkeepsie Begins, Ms. Anastasia takes us back to the time where Beckett, Blake and Cole are teenagers and in doing so, readers like myself can witness and understand that their strong friendship and brotherhood. Their ties and bond to one another was stronger than blood. I loved that author was able to showcase that these young men endured so much in their youth in which shaped them to the men that they are today. Ms. Anastasia gave readers an in-depth perspective of what these young man had endured and experienced in the foster care system. Readers were able to witness the different personalities of these young men especially Beckett's since we were able to see more of his selflessness and caring nature. So if you are looking for a series that highlights and showcases loyalty, brotherhood, unconditional love, sacrifices and redemption then I highly recommend you to read the Poughkeepsie Series. Trust me when I say that Beckett, Blake and Cole will find a way to steal your hearts.

P.S. Though Poughkeepsie Begins was a prequel to Poughkeepsie, I higly recommend you to read and start with the first book, Poughkeepsie in order to grasp, understand, and feel for the characters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Never Alone. Brothers Forever. No one gets left alone. Nov. 22 2015
By The Fairest of All Book Reviews - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
And so it begins...

At the core of Beckett, Blake, and Cole's relationship is absolute trust and devotion. They may not be related by blood, but they're true brothers in every since of the word, helping each other to feel like they belong and giving one another a way to be more than they were.

Through the battles of loneliness, fear, and pain, the brothers have stood by each other, never leaving anyone behind, believing in one another and paving the way for them to survive their messed up pasts and maddening presents.

The Quiet One
The Broken One
The Reckless One

All three damaged in irreparable ways but somehow moving forward out of sheer will and desperation. Blake's issues leave him seeking solitude away from the light, shrouding himself in darkness in order to keep the monsters at bay. Cole loses himself in his psyche in order to endure his tormented memories and shield himself from the pain. Beckett is clearly their leader and he's the perfect choice because he goes out of his way to take care of those closest to him and do the kind of things that may not make him moral and honest but it definitely illustrates how he protects his own at all costs to himself.

The brotherhood Beckett, Blake, and Cole share is one that was established early on in order to survive foster care, but it continues because they willingly fight in each other's corner. Nothing is more important than protecting their bond and being available at all times so they never have to endure anything alone. And, this idea is meticulously illustrated throughout Poughkeepsie Begins.

Regardless of the situation, everyone chooses a path to follow and Debra Anastasia provides readers with how the Poughkeepsie brothers decided which way to go and for what reasons, allowing us to understand what led Beckett to a life of power and crime; Blake to his music, and Cole to his faith.

Never Alone. Brothers Forever. No one gets left alone.

I will admit it. When I first heard there would be a Poughkeepsie Pre-quel, I was a little nervous. The boys mean so much to my heart and I wasn't sure I could take it.

But, I should have had faith that Debra Anastasia would weave her magic again. And weave her magic she did.

This book, this series, is nothing short of sublime.

You will not be disappointed. Not at all.

ARC Review:

Poughkeepsie Begins by Debra Anastasia

If you have read Poughkeepsie, you will absolutely love Poughkeepsie Begins. Debra Anastasia digs into the beginning of the brotherhood and friendship created at an young age between Beckett, Blake, and Cole. These three men who are closer than any blood brothers could ever be, and will always have each other's backs. It is truly a sad an emotional storyline; in that you get an in-depth look into what these young men endured in the foster care system, and the abuse and perseverance that brought them together for life.

I love the way Anastasia shows even more of the depth and selflessness that is Beckett. He is always viewed as so hard and the strong one of the group, but this story exposes his ability to love and sacrifice all for those he cares for in order to protect them.

Poughkeepsie Begins is a definite must read for all of those who loved Poughkeepsie as much as I did. Beckett, Blake, and Cole will steal your hearts all over again.
