How to choose a power log splitter
Log splitters are either electric or petrol-fuelled, and are available in horizontal and vertical models. Horizontal log splitters are normally smaller than vertical log splitters, and electric log splitters are less powerful than their petrol counterparts. However, although not as powerful as petrol log splitters, electric log splitters are quieter, more economical, and require less maintenance than petrol log splitters.
If you plan to split low volumes of small logs, a horizontal electric log splitter will get the job done. However, if you’re going to be splitting medium-sized logs in higher volumes, or small, hard logs, choose either an electric- or petrol-powered vertical log splitter.
The most powerful log splitters on the market are petrol-powered horizontal splitters, which can be hitched to a tractor or motor vehicle. They can handle large pieces of all types of wood, and are the best choice for splitting close grain woods.
