Product description

Product Description

If you're interested in improving your life, being happier, or more effective as a manager, it could be for you. You could use it as preparation if you are going to attend an NLP training course, or you could use it to get some practical benefits from the NLP principles even if you never intend to go in a classroom again!

When I train NLP courses, I've often noticed that major realisations or 'Aha!' moments for many participants often come quite early in the course, when they learn about the 'presuppositions' or principles of NLP. So before the participants have had a chance to learn much in the way of 'technical' NLP skills, and certainly before they've had a chance to practice enough to get good at them, they're already seeing the potential for big improvements.

I've come to believe that the most useful thing about the principles of NLP is that you can use them to make your life better, without any formal training or skills in NLP.

Obviously you will get even better results if you do get some training and develop some skills, but acting ‘as if’ the principles are true will still help you. This is because the principles are an attitude and a way of looking at the world which you can regard as a set of instructions for success.

This book explains 12 principles of NLP, each with practical tips and exercises that you can use straight away to get new perspectives on life, relationships, work and success.

As an NLP trainer, I believe that NLP is a great set of techniques for heightening capabilities in managing change and communication. I know it works, and I love teaching NLP. However, for many reasons, there are not a lot of good solid books on NLP that will satisfy a newcomer and yet leave them curious enough to want to learn more. In this short, friendly, sensible introduction, Andy Smith sets out what people really need to know about NLP so that they can make good choices in their lives and good decisions about how to learn more NLP. It's a good book for readers (because Smith is a good writer) and it's a good book for skeptics. You don't have to "buy into" anything to read a chapter and apply it to your own experience. When you get new information, you know you have found value.

If you are new to NLP, this is a terrific place to start. If you love NLP and are looking for better ways to talk about it, this will give you some good ideas. If you are curious about how changing one thought can change behaviour and results, you can explore that in this clear and engaging guide. I'll be recommending this book often.

5.0 out of 5 stars NLP at its best Feb. 18 2016

I came to Andy's books having listened to a number of his NLP podcasts. These podcasts made it clear to me that Andy has an exceptional gift for presenting material. Having completed a Masters training in NLP myself, I felt that these books might be "beneath me". I couldn't have been more wrong. It is refreshing to find an author who can use such simple language to explain profound concepts. There is nothing airy fairy in this book, just a pragmatic, sensible and very useful presentation of the basic NLP pre suppositions. If NLP was always presented in this way, I am sure that it would have a better reputation in general. I can highly recommend this book to people with and without formal NLP training.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book! June 20 2013

Andy Smith has written a wonderful, readable book - it gives a great introduction to NLP by focusing solely on the presuppositions, or principles, of this complex body of thought. Andy has a way of making strange sounding ideas very simple and understandable. He relates everything to how it can be useful to you and can improve your life.
I love the way he slays some golden cows of the human potential movement - in particular the Mehrabian communication model which is trotted out continuously in many trainings to demonstrate (erroneously so it seems) that words only account for 7% of communication and the rest is non-verbal.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in NLP or personal development and who wants a simple, easy to comprehend introduction to a subject that is frequently misunderstood and misinterpreted. Andy's book will make it all clear.

3.0 out of 5 stars The book has good reviews, but I will assume others have more ... Jan. 31 2016

Don't buy this book if your objective is to learn what NLP is and how it works. I have tried several times to get something of substance from thos book and finally, out of utter frustration, deleted it. For me there is a cognitive disconnect in understanding these principles because there is no baseline explanation of NLP, how NLP is used and examples illustrating NLP. This is not a primer. The book has good reviews, but I will assume others have more of a baseline in NLP than do I.

5.0 out of 5 stars really really helpful!! Sept. 14 2013

I REALLY enjoyed this book! I've always had an interest in NLP, learning and using the techniques. In sales and in life, but it's a huge discipline and unless you really really study and dedicate time to it, it's a lot to learn!
This book breaks down some key tenets and uses great examples...it's not overwhelming at all, but easily laid out!
I refer back to it all the time and am now recognizing more and more since I'm using it more in everyday situations.
Terrific!!!!

Well written, easy to comprehend and put to use. I've been to several NLP training sessions and in my opinion Andy Smith nails it. I could have saved a few bucks just reading and applying his books.
