Hope Into Practice, Jewish Women Choosing Justice Despite Our Fears Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 8 ratings
4.4 on Goodreads
26 ratings

Anchored in Jewish ethical tradition, community-building, and an activist’s call to repair the world, “Hope into Practice” is about human liberation, linking personal healing with social justice. It also asks Jewish women to love ourselves enough to face our fears without acting on them—expanding our sense of possibility, empowering our activism. This book brings to life an irresistible blend of healing stories, fascinating history, and a fair-minded perspective on Israel-Palestine. It also includes an extensive Action-Oriented Reader's Guide, for groups and individuals.

"'Thank you' is what I thought I was supposed to say when told I didn't 'look Jewish.'" What will make it irresistible for Jewish women to free ourselves of internalized anti-Semitism? This book's bottom line is that the better we feel about who we are and where we come from, the better we’ll treat other people—and the more positive/powerful our activism will be in creating a just and generous world, plus the more joyful, expansive and meaningful our own lives will be.

Product description

Review

"Based on the bold assumption that communal and individual healing is integral to justice work, Rosenwasser's multi-disciplinary book is written from a poignant, personal perspective. Hope into Practice allows readers to reflect on their own struggles with Jewish identity, queerness, and ethical commitment in order to imagine a better future. A must-read for all Jewish feminists!" [Alainya Kavaloski, Jewish Caucus Chair, National Women's Studies Association]

When I first read the Table of Contents, I was surprised to feel tears arise: tears of need, hunger, yearning, promise. Penny's book is filled with wild, truthful, and exuberant voices, you can feel their spirits in their words. [Rabbi Margaret Holub]

"The Jewish women you'll meet in this book will inspire you, make you laugh, and challenge you to be more fierce. This is a book about liberation from our narrow places and the power to change the world. No matter who you are, you'll learn something new about being human." [Noah T. Winer, Co-founder of MoveOn.org, Board member of Jewish Voice for Peace]

"A powerful tool for today's Jewish activists. Rosenwasser challenges us to ask what Jewishness could be without suffering or victimhood--questions asked with joy, not shame. Hope Into Practice acknowledges that we cannot wait to heal all our wounds before we can act--but cannot wait until our movements are successful before we turn to our healing." [Marjorie Dove Kent, Executive Director, Jews for Racial & Economic Justice (NYC)]

"This reviewer found the book to be one of hope as it shared the many sides of being a Jewish woman, looking for ways to remedy the many injustices of the past by going forward to create justice for everyone. Readers, whether Jewish or not, will rethink the stereotypes that limit us all." -San Francisco Book Review

"A wonderful, gutsy, and inspiring book. Penny Rosenwasser takes on the most explosive issues in American Jewish life today--racism and anti-Semitism, victimization and privilege, and Jewish politics around Israel and Palestine--and she does it with a generosity of spirit and a clear head. A vision of a progressive Jewishness for a multicultural 21st century comes through proud and clear." [Karen Brodkin, Professor of Anthropology, UCLA]

"Hope into Practice: Jewish Women Choosing Justice Despite Our Fears by long time peace feminist Penny Rosenwasser is a book for everyone, even recovering Catholics withholding judgment on Pope Francis like myself. The gritty personal stories of contemporary Jewish feminists imbue her calls for the centrality of Jewish multi-culturalism, liberatory healing, and her advocacy for security, dignity, and self-determination, for Israel and Palestine through changes in US policies. All are grounded in the precept of 'tikkun olam, ' mending the world. In dinner discussions of Palestine/Israel intractability, yes there still are some, I'm the one dovening 'but what are we gonna do?' Thankfully Rosenwasser's bracing book concludes with a 38-page action-oriented Reader's Guide, a tool for organizers and activists. Hope floats throughout this book and the question, 'What could Jewishness be without suffering or victimhood?' is asked in joy not shame. It is a question for all faith traditions." -Kate Clinton, The Progressive

"Rosenwasser's book is powerful because it goes beyond explaining how internalized Jewish oppression operates to argue that we need to understand and heal from internalized oppression in order to move toward liberation, build coalitions, and stop enacting trauma on other people, particularly Palestinians." -Wendy Elisheva Somerson, Tikkun

Yes, my expectation is met. I know the book. It is a Jewish activist's deep look at the feelings of herself and others as they do justice work on various fronts incl Palestinian rights, and have to also work through such things as security for Jews, old but current anti-Semitism over the centuries, internalized anti-Semitism, government blowback and critiques within their own community. The book speaks deeply to me as a Jewish woman seeking justice in the world, but it is useful for anyone who wants to look at their deeper feelings as they stand up vs inequality etc.

I found this book truly inspiring, enlightening to me as a Gentile woman. The hope and joy that shone through gave my great hope for the future. The sharing of the realities of the generational pain carried by Jewish women humbled me but also explained why Israel is so governed by fear. My admiration for the American Jewish women and men who stand alongside the Palestinians and continue to protest the Israeli occupation, knows no bounds. When I was in the States 25 years ago I attended the UN Special Session on The Question of Palestine and there met Jewish people who were against the Occupation.I thought them remarkable and courageous people and this book confirms that original impression a thousand fold. Reading this book was a very moving experience and I will be recommending it to others.
