HASH(0xa0aba5dc) out of 5 stars Wonderful story about love and second chances Dec 30 2014

What a fantastic read!!

Great read about a playboy named Carter who loves his aunt. When he finds out how sick she is, that she is terminal, he rushes to be with her.

Carter is desperate to make his aunt’s last days smooth and peaceful. Only way he knows to do that is tell her that he is engaged- engaged to the girl that raised both him and her-Lauren Olsen.

Lauren has no one in her life, save Aunt Dorothy. She does anything that she asks because she wants to show her love for Aunt Dorothy, even though she didn’t have to. She is a very compassionate, smart and outgoing woman. She did for others , yet when it came to herself, and her love for Carter, she held that in and kept that a secret because she had already been hurt before by Carter and didn’t want to hurt anyone by her feelings and wanted to keep Aunt Dorothy’s last days happy ones.

In the past, Carter and Lauren had been raised together and had some sort of relationship but Carter bailed and moved away to build his company and make a name for himself. He left Lauren, and she just kept that hurt to herself .
What drove me nuts about this story was the cousin in law, Allison. She was always putting down Lauren, always telling her that she was a nobody and that she was “ just the help”. She said this in front of Carter and Aunt Dorothy. They never stood up for her and I was so mad about that. I really wished that would have stood up for her and delivered the “smackdown” to this witch. Down the road , something does happen to Alison but it just wasn’t what I was expecting.

I do love this story and how it takes the reader on a journey, Carter and Lauren’s journey and where it ends. I would love to see a story come down the road for Lauren’s friend Sophie. She is awesome sounding and a story for her would be great.

My rating: 4.3 starts ****

HASH(0xa0aba5f4) out of 5 stars Nice Read! Dec 30 2014

Carter Richardson is a commitment phobe. His parents were so in love with each other, when the other passed on, they forgot they had a son to take care of. The only one that mattered to him is his aunt. So when he learned that she was terribly sick, he went back to visit her. He was too guilty of being absent for a very long time and in a full blown panic. No wonder, to appease his aunt, he tells her that he was engaged to his aunt's beautiful assistant, Lauren.

As for Lauren, it was better thinking of Carter when he was miles away, but having him near was detrimental to her peace of mind. Not to mention his sudden outburst with the lies of their engagement. She must remember that this was Carter, the one who broke her heart when she was 18, the one who didn't believe in commitment & ever-afters and their engagement was just for the sake of his ailing grandmother.

She agreed to what he wanted, just to appease the aunt who was like her second mother when she lost her family. After all, it would only stay inside the family, or so she was promised UNTIL Carter brought it up, made it public to save the family business.

NO FALLING IN LOVE. But how can she not fall in love with him - when he was all she ever wanted? She tried to stop it, tried to tell her heart not to fall, - but it was futile. How can she protect her heart when it won't listen to her?

I love the pacing of the story - it wasn't draggy or overly fast. It was short and I finished this in one sitting. There were a lot of sweet moments to swoon for, some mini-heartbreaks, a public grand gesture for the groveling and a lovely ending. A great read in a cold afternoon or a day in the beach.

HASH(0xa0abaa2c) out of 5 stars Pretending With the Playboy Dec 29 2014

This was a very fun story. Both characters were very real and I fell in love with them very quickly. Carter is a man that is jaded to commitment, although I didn't quite grasp why until near the end. There are a lot of hints and I was probably being a bit dense about it. He's running from his family and his family's company and legacy. He is forced to come back to it all when he finds out his Aunt is dying.

Enter Lauren - a blast from his past that he's never quite forgotten or gotten out of his system. She's an art PhD (which I totally loved) and is trying so very very hard to prove herself to the world. One of Carter's not so nice relatives insists on calling her "the help" and I just wanted to haul off and slap her each time. She was such a sweetheart that I couldn't stand anyone being mean to her.

So, in order to put the dying Aunt's heart at peace, Carter and Lauren pretend an engagement - not the most original plot, but there are some very fun twists and turns in this one. What was supposed to be a small lie kept in the family quickly snowballs out of control.

The ending was very touching and some of you may cry. You can really tell that the family cares for each other and just didn't quite now how to show it at times. The final scene was quite beautiful and made for the perfect ending.

HASH(0xa0abadec) out of 5 stars Very enjoyable Dec 29 2014

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's very well written and the characters are intriguing. Carter enjoyed his playboy lifestyle in Chicago and has no desire to change it. When he finds out his aunt is ill he rushes to her. To make her think he has settled down the way she wants he ask life long friend Lauren to pretend to be his fiancee. Great premise and it's very well done. I highly recommend this one.

HASH(0xa0abaed0) out of 5 stars Good storyline, bad formatting Dec 31 2015

I'm having trouble deciding on what rating. I enjoyed the storyline of this book. It a lone is five stars. I was completely involved with the characters in this story. Unfortunately, the formatting/editing was not so good. I didn't have any trouble following the story at first. A few editing mistakes I could fix in my head. But at 71%, I got completely confused. I had to go back, reread, trying to figure out if part of the book was missing. After a couple times, and moving on in the story, I discovered that they didn't leave warning that the scene was over and were time jumping to the next "event" (from sex in bed to an elevator visiting a business associate). Most leave several spaces or add stars or something dividing the scenes. It happened several times. I got use to fixing it in my head. If you read a lot, it's easy to see and adjust when you're expecting it. If not, you will be frustrated. I read a lot and it really did effect my reading experience. If it's fixed, I'll adjust my rating! Like I said in the beginning, the storyline was really good!
