Product Description

"Dark, perverse, and unbearably erotic, Pretty When You Cry is Skye Warren at her gritty best."~ Anna Zaires, USA Today bestselling author of Twist Me

A new dark romance novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Wanderlust...

I came from a place of dirt floors and holy scriptures. They told me the world outside was full of sin, and the first night I escape, I find out it's true. Ivan saves me, but he does more than that. He takes me. He makes me his own girl.

My conditioning runs too deep. Ivan sees what I am.

That's the thing about showing a mouse to a cat. He wants to play. And it's terrifying, even for me. Because the only thing darker than my past is his.

****************

Author's Note: Pretty When You Cry is a STANDALONE dark romance novel. It's set in the sexy Stripped series world but can be read alone. Not intended for those uncomfortable with the subject matter or under eighteen.

Candace Toussaint is running from her past when she meets Ivan, the owner of The Grand strip club. Ivan takes her in and soon she is his.

Yet, the past has not forgotten about Candace and although she continually runs from Ivan, the conditioning she received growing up brings her back to Ivan and his punishments. But soon she will have to face the past head on and maybe some secrets were better left in the past.

I knew their was definitely something in Candace's past that made her the way she was and as I read on, I discovered I was right. I could never imagine growing up as she did and I'm glad she was able to leave, although it is pretty sad that people do live like that. She is such a mixture of opposites - strong yet weak at the same time. As much as she really needs and wants to escape her life she is continually brought back, and somewhat enjoys what happens to her after.

Ivan is such an enigma right until the end of the book. He wants Candace yet doesn't and treats her so badly that my heart just broke over her need to be loved and wanted. I'm glad he is finally able to figure out his own demons.

I enjoyed this book but for me personally one thing that I found distracting was what Ivan had Candace call him. I found for me it took something away, especially once I learned about the relationships that both Ivan and Candace had with their families. That being said I would read the author again as this was my first book by the author.

Bizarre. Dark. Divergent. This is the recipe for the first book I read in this series and yes, not only can it be read as a standalone, it is also perfectly categorised as such. Why? Well, how many times have we all read a book in a series which we haven't started from the beginning and had trouble getting our heads around names and places? So to my delight, I sailed through this book without any confusion. However, it wasn't without its heart-stopping moments. I was forewarned that the story might not be to my liking. Far from it! The protagonists' pasts in a plot which had its twists and turns kept me on the edge at all times.

Quote: Ivan ~ "Where did you touch yourself?"

Candace ~ "No, don’t …. don’t make me tell you."

Ivan ~ "No, little one. You’re going to show me."

The heroine's submissiveness towards her 'captor-cum-master' in every sense of the word, made me want to pull her hair out. After reading the first few chapters, I could only imagine she had never had the option of parental refusal to acquiesce, had never known any better and for this reason, she acted the way she did. I quickly came to the conclusion that her upbringing was a religious one since young adults don't usually ask for absolution and a character from a sect would come back to haunt her. She wants that freedom she has never had though. Poor, poor lass. When she realises what is in store for her, and with no means except for her strong survival instincts, she fights tooth and nail. Inadvertently disobeying, her punishment is outrageously harsh. And when the opportunity to escape the hellish situation she's in arises, she doesn't think twice.

HASH(0xa3501588) out of 5 stars An erotic, dark and gritty story Oct. 18 2015
By Shirley Quinones - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I'm just going to leave this right here, but please don't HATE. I'm not trying to be contrary, just honest.

Candance left her life behind after being raised in a 'cult' type of environment ruled by scriptures and abuse at the hands of the man who served as her father figure. When she leaves, Candance ends up in Ivan's care. Only 16 years old, scared and broke Candance feels reassured when Ivan opens his 'home' to her providing her shelter, education and everything a 'normal' teen should need.

But Candance wants to experience more. She longs to see the world around her and figures working at the club Ivan owns is the perfect solution. She'll get to experience more of the world and even maybe draw the eye of the man who has cared for her for the past couple of years. But Ivan is closed off and emotionally unavailable. He does recognizes a need in Candy that complements his own desires.

And so it starts Candy and Ivan's perverted Daddy/Little Girl relationship, that although not sexual in nature, has sensual undertones that soon leaves Candy wanting more from Ivan and trying her best to get away when she doesn't get what she wants.

Okay. So here goes.

Throughout the year, I've been reading about this fantastic series that's dark, erotic and so amazing that I felt like I was missing out on the greatest thing since e-readers and Netflix. So of course, in preparation for the release of this latest story, I spent last week reading all the books in the series and immersing myself in this dark, gritty world Skye Warren created. Believe me, it was dark and gritty and everything you'd expect in a dark romance. Personally, I have no problem with that. Add a little sex, a little conflict and you've got yourself the greatest thing since e-readers and Netflix. ;-)

Unfortunately for me, it was the lack of a connection that served as my downfall. Now, some may say that there's an obvious connection between Ivan and Candy. But in truth, did these individuals allowed themselves to get to know each other? Besides their shared desires/needs, what else did they had in common? Were their moments of intimacy meaningful in any way other than they shared themselves in a sexual manner? These were some of the questions I asked myself while reading. But in the end the answers ended up in the negative.

As the story progressed, it was all about what Candy wanted from Ivan, her past and her need to get away. I got a lot of what Ivan expected from Candy, a lot of his desire for her but not once did I get the chance to get to know him better, his needs and/or his past. This left me feeling indifferent about him, thus making me indifferent about their relationship as a whole.

Were there moments when they let their guards down? A couple. But it wasn't until the very end that I got to see them truly share a moment of truth between them. However, these were too little too late and not enough for me to convince myself that there was something there worth all the drama.

In any case, I did enjoy the author's writing style, the plot and the resolution to the conflict. At times the pace seemed to drag a bit, but it stayed constant overall which helped me to keep on reading instead of DNF-ing like I intended.

All in all, an erotic, dark and gritty story, but not for me since the romance never got a foot in the door--in my opinion.

HASH(0xa3501960) out of 5 stars Definite theme of father/daughter sexual abuse - reader beware Nov. 9 2015
By Georgia Rose - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
I read tons of romance lit - including the "dark" and the "erotic." This is the 1st book I remember reading by this author. This book has no redeeming qualities. There is a definite theme of father/daughter sexual abuse from the beginning of the book. It starts in the cult and then carries through with the "romance" between the 2 main characters. He likes to be called Daddy and she is his Little Girl. He beats her (spanks her naked rear very hard and repeatedly) for 3 years while he educates her, feeds her, clothes her, protects her, etc. That is the role of a real father if you leave out the naked rear end beatings. Then when they do have actual sex, she of course has asked for it so that makes it ok right? After they begin a full out sexual relationship, the Daddy / Little Girl thing is enough to seriously make you cringe while reading. I understand and actually enjoy the theme in a lot of today's books about male dominant / female submissive sexual relationships. That is not what this is. This is creepy. I do not understand the good reviews. What book were they reading?

HASH(0xa3501bf4) out of 5 stars Well written 'Daddy' story Oct. 26 2015
By Katherine A - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Lucky for me, this is not my first 'daddy' book so unlike others, I had no issues with viewing this as just another fetish, which is exactly what it is. Some people like to be tied up, some spanked, some sodomized and other like role play including but not limited to 'daddy and little girl' play. As long as you view it as the story the author intended, you should be fine with reading it. Anyway enough about fetishes, let's get to my review :)

Ok, so Candace ran away from what I would call a religious commune/cult and lucky for her Ivan found her and took her in keeping her safe.

Even though she offers him her virginity in exchange for his help, he doesn't take it. In fact it will be a few years before these two get sexual in that regard.

For years they have been going round in circles with Candy being naughty intentionally in order to have Ivan spank her and Ivan trying to do all he can to protect Candy from himself and his desires.

Eventually the heart wins, and Candy and Ivan find their HEA but its a turbulent and bumpy road to get there.

HASH(0xa385d12c) out of 5 stars I just CAN NOT handle the whole Daddy complex Oct. 29 2015
By mrs_goatman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
This was supposed to be dark and gritty, but it was just icky for me. Candace was born and raised in a religious cult-like compound. At 16, she escapes, but it's quick to see she's an easy target in the outside world. She happens upon a strip club and before being accosted, is "saved" by the owner, Ivan. From the get-go, I knew Ivan was all sorts of dark, broody crazy. But he takes on a Daddy role - and literally insists on having Candy call him Daddy, and he calls her little one. He gets off on punishing her by spanking and hitting her but he doesn't ever sleep with her for years. I just CAN NOT handle the whole Daddy complex. It was creepy icky reading it and I almost didn't finish this book. I also felt like the characters constantly were having an identity crisis. Candy would run away, Ivan would find her, things would be fine, then start all over. At the end, when Ivan finally walks away, then Candy begs to go back. I was like, good grief, just end this already. The ending was really choppy for me and too nice and neat for the rest of the story.

HASH(0xa385d144) out of 5 stars No Saving Graces! Nov. 1 2015
By Amrak - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I have always found Skye Warren's books to be enthralling, but she completely lost me on this one. The title should have been "Cry Baby." I swear the heroine--Candy--was constantly crying! Seriously, it was an utter blubber fest. I also hated the whole age-play theme. The Daddy/little girl routine was overkill and downright sickening. The sex scenes were not enticing or exciting, they were gross. Despite all the bad things Ivan had endured in his past, he was the least sympathetic hero Skye has written to-date. Usually, I find her beautiful monsters to be sexy and easily forgivable but not Ivan. He had no saving graces that I could see. Oh, well, they can't all be winners. I get the feeling that this series has run it's course. Perhaps it's time for Skye to wrap it up and move on to something new
