Primal Shift Part 1

It's July the Fourth, and Americans have slowed down long enough to celebrate their independence - and the day off. But a thousand motorists suddenly abandon their cars on the Golden Gate Bridge and leap to their deaths in a roiling bay. Jets packed with families rain down from the skies above Salt Lake City International Airport, dotting the landscape with orange fireballs. Worse yet, New York City police launch a murderous rampage against those they swore to protect and serve.

Law and order across the globe collapses in less than five minutes, plunging humanity into chaos.

Something is affecting our minds, our sanity. Could it be a terrorist attack? The ultimate virus? Or an experiment gone horribly wrong?

A handful of survivors claws its way out of the ashes of the old world, strangely unaffected by The Shift. Among them, a frantic mother desperate to find her son. A sailor hunting a soulless killer. A former CEO willing to kill for power over this new, feral wasteland.

Together, they'll battle both the hordes of bloodthirsty cannibals who used to be their own families and neighbors, and a dark figure who commands these legions with his every twisted whim.

Someone somewhere must know what happened, where to find safety. And whether those eerie lights shimmering in the skies overhead are an omen of something far worse than even this bleak living hell.

Warning
: This is a story about the desperate measures people sometimes take to stay alive after a cataclysmic event. Includes violence and some foul language.

Review of Primal Shift by Griffin Hayes

I was really excited to see a new offering by Griffin Hayes, one of my top favourite authors, and this seems to be a new direction. With an incredibly effective reader's hook, Mr. Hayes has the story--this one to be in episodic format--off and running. Over many decades of apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic reading, I've often pondered that personal "what if"--what would I do if IT happened, could I survive, and how. I have never tried to consider what an apocalypse that destroyed my ability to read and communicate would be like--never until now.

Mr. Hayes offers up several different plot threads here, starring divergent characters (some of whom, like Dana, are very likable; some, like Nutrilife CEO Larry, are basically jerks; and then there's the very mysterious "Finn" (mysterious even to himself).

"Primal Shift" is an easy one-sitting read and difficult to put down. I know it's going to linger in my mind while I await the next episode, and I'll be staring out my windows, watching for those enigmatic lights in the sky.

HASH(0xa663c810) out of 5 stars A refreshingly NEW take on an old premise March 20 2013
By Craig - Published on Amazon.com

This is a new take on an old premise, the apocalypse. In an over-saturated zombie market, Griffin Hayes has given us a new scenario for the end of the world as we know it. Griffin is feeding us this story in episodes to be dished out at least monthly, and I like that. I don't like starting a series and sometimes waiting 6 months or more for the next installment.

Hayes has set up the story with the introduction of a wonderful cast of characters. From the mother of two fighting to protect her children, to a real corporate a-hole, he presents his characters in a way that draws the reader in right from the start. This being the first episode, we are left with no real answers but plenty of questions that I'm sure will be addressed in the future episodes.

Griffin's descriptive style and sharp dialogue make the pages practically turn themselves and I found myself disappointed when the last one was turned, or swiped since I read on my Kindle ;-)

In the end, this is a series that I look forward to reading and I suggest you grab it as well if you're looking for a fresh take on the apocalypse from a great author.

HASH(0xa6644168) out of 5 stars This is the way the world ends... and it's AWESOME! April 5 2013
By Andrew V - Published on Amazon.com

An airplane screaming down the runway, soon to be in flames...
A routine coast guard rescue off the Golden Gate Bridge... until the bodies hit the water...
A new age snake oil salesman, a self-described rat, ready to do whatever it takes to thrive or survive... even murder.
...and a man with no name, no memory, who wakes up in bizarre a lab covered in pink goo.

These and more serve as our eyes to witness the beginning of the end: a mysterious world wide event that shakes the surface of the earth and shatters the skies. This is the way the world ends, with a tremor and a shimmer, and a sky full of lights that send most of humanity into madness. Glimpses of an event that seems to send the minds of mankind back to the stone age, or worse. Chaos, carnage, confusion. And, crawling forth from the rubble, a handful of survivors trying to figure out how the heck world went so sour. And what caused it all.

PRIMAL SHIFT is a fantastic read, and a welcome sight among the ever growing mountain of doomsday literature. There aren't zombies or werewolves but good old fashioned mystery and chaos and characters one can quickly care about among the ruins of civilization. It's true horror told by a fresh voice, it doesn't get better than that. You're in great hands for this ride, as Griffin Hayes is a master storyteller; he tears the world apart and makes you beg for more, more, more.

I'll be there for Episode 2, eagerly awaiting the end of world.

HASH(0xa66342ac) out of 5 stars I bought the entire first season Aug. 8 2013

But, didn't enjoy it. I don't really Ike books about the devil and this one was so depraved. Not a realistic cause or outcome for the apocalypse. The actual writing is pretty good, but the subject matter is stomach clearing. I won't buy the next season, even though the last couple of pages made it seem like the plot was turning in a direction I found intriguing. Too much suffering on my part through killings, hackings, body parts, smelly dead bodies, etc. I think the reveling in the evil was unnecessary and actually detracted from the story line.

HASH(0xa6639d14) out of 5 stars Great Beginning! May 3 2013

Set in different US locations (CA/NYC/UT), there are a handful of survivors after severe earthquakes and bright lights in the sky (similar to the Northern Lights) appeared. The survivors are largely unaffected. Some, however, do show symptoms of not being able to speak or comprehend.

There is a level of suspense in each of these three US areas - it will be interesting to see this story evolve.

I liked the read so far and can see lots more intrigue and thrill coming up in the second episode.

Highly recommended!
