Review

Praise for Anne Rice’s
PRINCE LESTAT

“[Rice] retakes her throne as Queen of the Damned . . . visceral and gritty . . . [Prince Lestat] infuses new life into the Vampire Chronicles and sets the stage for a new era.

-Elise de los Santos, Chicago RedEye

“No one does what Anne Rice does . . . Not only does she find ways—brilliant ways—to tease new narrative potential from old stories, she does so while acknowledging that those stories are already part of the other characters’ psyches.  I don’t know of any other novelist doing that . . . she has not lost any of her flair for description, allowing us to experience the world the way her vampires do, with the sensory volume turned up to 11 . . . fun, sexy, and irresistible.”

-January Magazine

“Irrepressively seductive.”

-John Russell, Next Magazine

“Bloody marvelous . . . Prince Lestat is saving the undead from banality and overfamiliarity.”

-Daniel D’Addario, Time

“Chilling.”

-Us Magazine

“Anne Rice reminds us just how immense and rich with history her universe of poetic, morally questioning vampires is, and Prince Lestat serves as a palate cleanser to the hormone-soaked teen dramas of the past few years. It’s nice to have a real grown-up back in the game.”

-Cotton Codinha, Elle

“Ambitious...Rice never lost touch with the exuberant, often witty, and always fearless voice of irrepressible vampire Lestat de Lioncourt... Rice has offered us a tale of tremendous ambition, and she’s absolutely delivered.”

-Matthew Jackson, BookPage

I love Anne Rice....I've read all of the Vampire Chronicles and Witch series and loved them all. I was really looking forward to this book as it was bringing back much loved characters.

I'm currently about three quarters of the way through the book and it's taken me a long time to get here. I've put the book down a few times and taken a break from it. As much as I love this series, it just seems to have too much unnecessary fluff. While I still love all of the characters and loved reading about them again, I just have trouble wanting to keep turning the page.

While the stories have always taken time to develop in the author's own time, this just seems excessive. It really could have been edited down. That being said...I will finish this book. I will buy the next one she releases. I love the characters. I love the story line overall. I do still want to know what happens next. I feel like I've been reading about them for so long, that I have to continue to follow the journey. So yes, I would buy this again - because I want to know what happens to all of my favourite characters and will continue to follow their story.

I have been reading Anne Rice books since I was thirteen. Over the years, I can honestly say that Anne Rice never disappointed me, she was born to write and give life to her characters.
She made her characters come to life, giving them so many layers, that I felt they were not only real people, but people that I know.
The intricacy of the character's relationships, and Lestat's journey throughout the years kept me hooked from cover to cover. As much as I tried, I couldn't put the book down, I craved to know what would happen on the next page.
Of all the vampires, Lestat is the one who both absolutely loves and hates what he is, struggling to find a balance and purpose in the world. I felt that in this book more than the others, Lestat's character really grew and flourished.

For better or worse, depending upon your perspective, Prince Lestat is well-and-truly an Anne Rice novel in all respects. It's long and meandering, but lush and full of detail. It's full of heavy prose that invites you to linger, but scarce on plot development. It has a cast of characters that will challenge less-than-avid fans, but an inconsistency of character development that will challenge even avid fans.

Roughly 11 years have passed since we last met Rice's vampires upon the page, a decade during which she abandoned her atheism, returned to the Catholic church, nearly died (twice), rededicated her writing to glorifying God, once again distanced herself from organized Christianity, and ultimately returned to the world of vampires. For better or worse, that question of faith and that self-awareness of one's own mortality have more do with Prince Lestat than the Gothic opulence to which most fans so desperately wished to return.

Right off the bat (no pun intended), we realize this is going to be a very different sort of vampire tale. We're introduced to vampire doctors, scientists, and guinea pigs, all of them contributing to a pseudo-scientific explanation for vampirism that reeks of midi-chlorians. Not long after that, we're introduced to Lestat's son, a plot development that seems a desperate attempt to put a new spin on the idea of mortality, countering that dark cloud of intellectual progress being pulled over the supernatural concept of immortality. Not only that, but there's a whole Christ-like allusion to his role that I almost expected, but could have done without.

Moving onto our titular character, this book is less about Lestat than it is the vampires pining for his absence from the world.

I waited for so many years for Anne Rice to return to resurrect Lestat, along with millions of readers.
I could imagine her in her room with post-it-notes to remind her of the past novels.
Sadly, in my humble opinion, I think she truly underestimated the dedication of true believers.
With that being said, I still have hope that Anne Rice, with tidbits of information given by her within this novel itself, will spur her on to go into more detail with the "lesser characters", but could become just as important to write their stories as individuals, as she has done in her writings.

I was so excited to learn Anne Rice was delving back into The Vampire Chronicles. This book tied up a lot of loose ends and expanded our understanding of all our favorite characters. The Brat Prince really lives up to his title, so to speak, and takes us on a journey of mystery and intrigue.

Fitting end to the vampire chronicles. Great series and needed this book to wrap things up nicely. All the favorites show up and give you whay you want from the characters you love. If you're a fan of the series you'll love it; of not, you have a lot of great books to read.

Welcome back, Anne. I had almost given up. My perception of this work is that it is that of a mature, polished author who revisits her characters in the manner of long-lost friends and acquaintances. It is a joy to read.

I have read and loved every book Anne Rice has written, this new addition to the Vampire Chronicles is no exception. I only hope there will be more to follow. She is, hands down, my favorite author.
