Product Description

I wasn't planning on falling for Ethan Jamison, hell I wasn't planning on our paths ever crossing. He’s the most popular guy at school and a complete player. Me; I’m the perpetual good girl, trying to carry out one last request. But when you make a promise, how far do you go to see it through?

~ Blair

It’s a running joke that I’m a terrible liar, if only people knew the truth. My whole life has been spent making excuses and deflecting questions. I was pretty good at it until Blair Thomas entered my world. She saw through the mask that everyone is so willing to accept. She makes me want to tell her all my secrets, but can she promise to keep them?

~ Ethan

About the Author

Hello... I'm a little neurotic; I function on a tiny amount of sleep and a huge amount of caffeine. I love green skittles and have an irrational fear of stormy weather. When I’m not writing about super hot college guys, you can generally find me googling them...all in the name of research of course. I can be persuaded to do just about anything with the promise of a good book or a bottle of bubbles. Oh, and I also love to write.

I received a copy of the ePub from the Goodreads group Read 4 Review in exchange for an honest review.

What a wonderful read. Blair is recovering from the death of her best friend. Blair is truly a good girl—focused, positive, confident and comfortable in her own skin. She is not drawn into peer pressure. Blair begins to tutor bad boy Ethan. He is the bad boy according to his very public reputation. They are a most unlikely couple but the connection between them is undeniable.

The author brilliantly tells the story through Blair and Ethan’s points of view. This gives the reader access to both characters—their honest thoughts and feelings are not hidden from the reader. Ethan’s many layers are revealed and the author exposes Ethan’s true persona. They sound and act like high school seniors. These likeable characters make this Young Adult Fiction a page-turner. The secondary characters have distinct voices and give depth to this well written novel. The twist and turns are shocking and keeps the reader forever guessing as secrets are shared.

And what a cliffhanger! Blair and Ethan’s story cannot be over. The reader will want book two immediately.

HASH(0xb3e770ec) out of 5 stars 5++++ stars for a FANtastic read! Aug. 9 2014
By Unrecoverable ATR - Addicted to reading! - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
First off, before I give my review, I need to say -WHEN IS THE NEXT BOOK COMING OUT? This is a fantastic book! For a debut author I am in utter awe with the literary work Elle Brooks has produced and published for her first book. If she keeps this up she will be in the company and ranks of these fabulous and successful authors: Penelope Douglas, S. Walden, Jay McLean, Katja Millay, K.A. Tucker, Tijan, Sara Wolf, and Colleen Hoover. I could go on and on! Seriously, I am blown away by how much I was drawn into this storyline, devoured every page, and became completely invested in these two characters - Ethan and Blair. No doubt - this is going in my read again folder on my Kindle app.

I have to say that it was very hard for me to read the first few chapters because my sister passed away almost 3 months ago from Leukemia, AML. Tears streamed down my face, because it opened up unhealed, hurt and sadness. Additionally, the author nailed the understanding about Leukemia - either she did extensive research or has experienced this heartache first hand. Leukemia is a dreadful cancer that truly steals the patient of their energy, dignity, and independence. I think she captured this with the character Emily.

Emily and Blair have the sweetest bond as best friends. They certainly come off more like sisters from another mother. I loved the devotion and connection these two shared. It felt real. The severity and doom of the diagnosis was captured, but it was heartwarming to see how they went through the pain together. A saying I once heard truly captures Emily and Blair - "A good friend knows all your best stories, but a best friend has lived them with you."

Emily has had a major crush on Ethan for several years. He is this hot, über popular, eye-candy that treats the lady's with a screw em and leave em attitude. However, despite his unsavory reputation Emily longs to hook up with him. She has followed, (ok..the better term is stalked) and dreamed about this boy for years. Conversely Blair has paid him no mind, since her friend called dibs.

Emily writes final letters to all those that she loved dearly. When Blair finally musters up the courage to open her letter, Blair finds her friend's unfinished bucket list. Emily's dying request was for her to check off the items she was unable to accomplish in her lifetime. Of course, her friend's long time crush is mentioned on the list multiple times. This is where the story takes off. It is out of the tragedy and loss of Emily, a beautiful, romantic love story unfolds.

Loss seems to follow Blair. Her Dad unexpectedly passed from a heart attack two years before her best friend's death. On top of all the loss of loved ones, she watches as her Mom spirals down a hole of depression. Many of nights she witnesses her mom's heavy drinking and knows her mother is teetering on the edge of becoming an alcoholic.

Ethan on the other hand has a home life that is a sad reality of a lot of kids. He has two parents, but it is not a home filled with love. His Dad is never satisfied, angry, abusive man. All I wanted to do is save this young man from the horror he endures at the hands of the man that should be protecting and loving him. Additionally, I wanted to scream at his "Mom" for finding reasons to excuse such horrific behavior.

Ethan wears two faces in order to mask the pain, while Blair is going through life with no expectations, so she can avoid hurt and pain. But when these two get together they find in each other the missing attributes from their home life: safety, acceptance, and unconditional love. The dialog between these two is swoon worthy and the connection these two have is combustible - H-O-T! They go through a lot together and through every obstacle their bond becomes stronger. I loved these two characters! They are so much fun to read about.

There are minimal grammatical errors, but they don't distract from the goodness of the story and can easily be fixed by the author. I only have two things I would have liked to have seen. First, I would have like to have seen public service announcements at the end of the book. It would have been nice to see a number or website for people to get help if they or someone close to them is enduring domestic violence and abuse. Additionally, I feel a missed opportunity by the author was by not including how to give to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Secondly, there is not any mention of the second book release date. It would have been nice to have a date or even a season/year, so I could be on the look out for it.

This book puts the reader through a roller coaster of emotions. It is edge of your seat, can't put down, tell all your friends to grab a copy, type of read. Even though there were difficult parts to read for me personally, it was an amazing love story. This author is very talented! I am so happy I stumbled across this fantastic book and got to experience an intense, memorable read. Don't pass it up- it is that good and I know you won't be disappointed. As for the steamy scenes, I would rate them R, but done in a tasteful manner. It is for sure a book for 17 or above. Hit buy and ENJOY!

HASH(0xb3e77338) out of 5 stars Not the typical NA/YA - SPOILERS ONLY about potential triggers Aug. 19 2014
By Justirishgirl - Published on Amazon.com

When I first started reading I thought it was going to the the typical NA/YA - manhoe who falls in love the with virgin and something happens at the end, such as he is found in a compromising position with another girl and the book ends on a cliffhanger. I was wrong.
Yes, it includes a manhore who falls in love with a virgin. Yes, it ends on a dreaded cliffhanger but I was wrong about the rest.

I do not want to spoil other than to talk about potential triggers because if I give more detail I do think it would ruin it for some readers. Also, I want a disclaimer of I do not know every trigger, just common ones.

SPOILERS about readers' potential triggers: Physical but not sexual abuse described while it is happening but not in gory detail. Death by disease but not of main characters. Sex including in book with teenagers (high school seniors) but not graphic and not frequent. Cliffhanger ending. No cheating, no breakups with OW/OM, no age difference, no BSDM and no pregnancy. END OF SPOILERS

There are only two things that I did not like about the book. First, the cliffhanger ending but I am grateful that the author warned us ahead of time. Also the fact that I have to wait to read the second book with no indication on when it will be out. If it is too long I am afraid I will forget to periodically check for it. Luckily this book fits one of the Amazon reading threads that I belong to, jealous, possessive heroes and so I was able to recommend it. It is good because members who belong to this thread are good about alerting the group when new books come out that fit the thread. Therefore if I do not catch when the next book comes out, maybe one of the other members will. I will be impatiently waiting....

BUT.....the writing is just too good. mad about the cliffhanger, but well....I'm so invested in the story that I need the cliffhanger to capture a breath so I'm prepared for the rest of the story.

good Lord the characters in this book are addicting. the writing is flawless. the storyline is engrossing. I don't know when book two comes out, but I'm not above begging Elle Brooks to hurry the hell up.

HASH(0xb3e775f0) out of 5 stars Gifted by author in exchange of an honest review. Aug. 4 2014

Blair Thomas is still hurting from the death of her best friend. Being a good student and a senior in high school, she was giving an assigment from her math teacher to tutor a fellow senior classmate. The last person she imagined to tutor was her best friend crush Ethan Jameson.

Blair had a secret , she was giving a list, a bucket list made by her best friend. She felt she had to honor the list, since that was the last thing she had from her.

Ethan Jameson was the most popular guy in their class and being a band member he had girls throwing themselves at him. He had any girl he wanted. Ethan never did the relationship status he had never met the girl that would inspired those desires.

He had a big secret and no one knew about it except his parents, he always played the cool guy card, that way no one would know his dark secret. When his math teacher told him he either get the help of a fellow student to tutor him or fail class, the last thing in his mind was to meet the girl whom he wants to spend the rest of his life.
Can Ethan and Blair stay together after they find out each others secrets or will they keep them apart?

I was taken by this emotional story. I laughed, I cried, I was angry.

This book will take you thru all those emotions and more.

I will recommend this book.

HASH(0xb3e77ae8) out of 5 stars Much better than I expected March 20 2016
By Jen R - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
3.5 stars

Promises Hurt was a better read than I was expecting. It was one of those reads where I was expecting more drama, but I am really glad the author didn't go there. The story was sweet and I'm glad I got to know these two characters. Though be warned - it does end on a bit of a cliffhanger so have book two ready.

Blaire is one of those girls who flies under the radar. Her best friend, Emily, was diagnosed with cancer when she was 15 so she has been dealing with that. She doesn't go out and party or anything like that. She wouldn't feel right about going and doing things when Emily couldn't. Only Emily is no longer there and now Blaire has to figure out how to go on without her. Emily did leave her with a bucket list of things she was not able to complete before she died. She hoped Blaire would complete them for her and it is that last little attachment to her best friend.

Ethan is a popular ladies man at school. He has never had a girlfriend, he just sleeps with girls then moves on to the next one. He was Emily's crush and as such Blair never really paid that much attention to him. After all he was Emily's. Only now that she is gone and she gets thrown together with Ethan she finds that he is not at all how she assumed. He is not that arrogant, self-centered jerk she thought he would be. He is sweet and kind and totally seems to like her! And she likes him...maybe a little too much.

Blair and Ethan were so sweet together. They both just fall into this easy camaraderie that just works. Neither of them have the happiest of pasts, Blair and her mom love each other, but there are some slight problems there. Ethan's family is not cool at all so he tries to hide what is really going on. Only with Blair he wants to be open and honest. He wants Blair to know everything. He wants to trust her and be with her and plan a life together. He is just counting down the days until he graduates and heads off to college. The days until he can escape his home life.

I was expecting more drama with the relationship, taking longer to get together or having more girls make Blair insecure or something, but there really wasn't much of that. It just felt natural like it all could really have happened. This was really just the story of Blair and Ethan and their relationship. Most of the issues were with their environment, not between them which was nice. Oh but the end! It is a bit of a cliffhanger so I need to go read the next book to see what happens. Though I am a bit nervous to start it...I don't want bad things to happen to these two! They should just be together forever! Hopefully it all works out in the end...
