Review

Using everyday language and a range of scientific evidence, this book explores the ins and out of sugar, from the different types - is brown sugar really better for us than white? - to how it is sneakily inserted in our everyday foods. Telegraph, Top 10 Diet Books [A] valiant ... attempt to warn us against our lust for sucrose British Medical Journal Arguably the leading nutritionist of his time Guardian A landmark work on the subject The Telegraph A medical classic -- Jack Winkler Nutrition Policy Unit, London Metropolitan University Yudkin was far ahead of his time with his idea of nutrition as a subject of great breadth: not just the study of the composition of foods, but the importance of enjoying a variety of fresh foods, and the recognition of the psychological and social factors that cause us to choose certain foods and avoid others Independent As an isolated voice, Yudkin, who died in 1995, may have lost the battle with the sugar industry four decades ago, but big food will find it more difficult to silence his growing army of disciples whose only incentive is to expose what's right for public health Guardian

About the Author

John Yudkin (1910-95) was a British physiologist and nutritionist, whose books include This Slimming Business, Eat Well, Slim Well and This Nutrition Business. He became internationally famous with his bookPure, White and Deadly, first published in 1972, and was one of the first scientists to claim that sugar was a major cause of obesity and heart disease.

Every person on the planet who eats sugar should have access to the information provided in this stunningly revealing work. Written in 1970's and updated in the 1980's, still the single most relevant written work on the toxicity of sugar known at that time. Since then we have Dr. Lustig (who was responsible for the reprinting of this amazing book) who is a truly great leader in the often thankless task of informing a less than interested public of what is so devastatingly wrong with our medical and food environments. History has shown us again and again that great minds and equally great truths sometimes take decades or even centuries to break down the barriers of conflicting interests to reveal the truths that lead to genuine knowledge and an improved civilization. My personal thanks to Dr. Lustig for bringing this truth to light in 2014.

I like the fact that this book takes a very balanced approach to the subject of sugar. The author is not inflammatory and just spreads out the case and questions. Since this book was first published there have been many others that confirm his concerns. I do read and pay attention to sugar levels in my food as I agree that it is a dangerous substance when over consumed, and that level is easily reached. Try staying under 12 grams a day!

Written in 1972 and John Yudkin certainly predicted the future. His theories on sugar weren't accepted at the time and everyone believed fat was the culprit. We seem to have gotten fatter so I'm guessing sugar likely is the issue

Trouble is, sometimes a Genius is recognised as such way past his time. Case in point here. More than 40 years ago this true and dedicated scientist (a rarity back then, and even scarcer these days it seems - look at the 'Global Warming" shameful manipulation/interpretation of data, lining the pockets of some famous advocates) was WARNING us of the danger of sugar in our diet. Obviously nobody paid attention then. Governments and their agencies who hand us down the "Diet Recommendations" should have! And if they had, they would have widely curtailed the use of sugar (under all its guises) years ago. Thus, most likely big numbers of the population today wouldn't be so ridiculously fat and sickly (Diabetes, etc.) as a direct consequence of over-consumption of processed food on a daily basis for years on end. I was shocked to see "Sugar" amongst the ingredients of "WINDSOR TABLE SALT"!!! Then again, since Sugar is about the only commodity on the market which 20 years ago was $1.99 for 2 kilos, and today is also $1.99 for 2 kilos. No wonder it is found as a filler in all processed foods.

Some of Yudkin's references are a little out of date, but most of his original research is revealing and his and predictions are coming to pass.

I was really impressed with this book. The science is well documented but it is still written in a way the layperson can understand. Really opened my eyes to the health benefits of reducing or even eliminating sugar from your diet.

This book was written about 1972 and proved to be prescient about the dietetic catastrophe of developed countries today. The food industry paid an epidemiologist to refute his evidence, and was successful in suppressing this information until recently. If you have any of the symptoms I have listed you should read this book, and then watch videos of Dr. Lustig, available on the internet, explaining the modern understanding of the chemistry that fructose is detoxified by the same pathhway in the liver that is used to detoxify alcohol, and that each can of soft drink does as much damage to the liver as a can of beer. Although it is very difficult to find any processed food without a lot of sugar, I have lost 13 pounds in 2 weeks by cutting out candy and cookies. I never did drink sugar drinks. I feel that my ideal weight is between 145 and 155 lbs. I had risen to 163 lbs over Christmas by eating candies, cakes and desserts on a daily basis. I never feel too hungry.
