I use this router with my Rogers Cable internet service. The Rogers modem that I have is the Cisco DPC3825 gateway, and I have it set to bridge mode. Make sure that you do this before connecting it to the Asus (or any other) router to avoid networking woes.
Now, for the tech-savvy folks who like advanced router features I must say that I've never before used a router with such an advanced configuration menu. The customization options and performance functions are world class and you can literally customize the settings of this beauty in whatever way you'd like. On top of that, the menu is sleek, elegant, and easy to use and navigate.
All in all, this is absolutely the best router available on the market in terms of speed, range, customization, and ease of use. You cannot go wrong with this router... I literally do not have one negative thing to say about it! If you are looking for a new router, do not look any further than this. The ONLY other router I would ever consider is the Asus RT-AC66U because it is identical to this with the addition of wireless AC... however, since this technology is not in any devices that I currently own or will own in the near future, the dual band N is more than sufficient.
Now, click Add-To-Cart - you need not look any further!
1. It is Dual-band (2.4 GHz and 5Ghz). Having the 5GHz is nice since I find out that I have too many neighbors' routers around at 2.4GHz but in the 5GHz band there is no single one, so new devices such smartphones may operate more reliable.
2. Wireless signal is powerful enough. The router sits in the basement but at the 2nd floor reception is still good (uo to maximum speed of the modem).
3. It is based on DD-WRT and has numerous features such as OpenVPN server to access the home network remotely.
4. IPv6 support (but my ISP is still IPv4 only).
5. All expected settings for the WiFi router: guest access, port forwarding, QoS, advanced routing, DMZ, etc, etc.
6. "Asuswrt-Merlin" makes it even better!
7. Stable and quick.
8. Cool design.
Mixed:
1. Initial setup was quick, though not ideal: the router was not able to connect to Internet at the first attempt and suggested to reboot the cable modem. After that it proceeded successfully, though it forgot that it prompted to change the password and I had to figure out that I still have to use the default password after the router reboot.
2. Does not have wall mount but holes for the stand may be used for this purpose.
Cons:
Actually nothing.
Some thoughts: today it is hard to find a good inexpensive wired router, so WiFi routers are still good choice for that purpose.
Removed a star for the issues listed below:
The guest mode is more basic than advertised. There is no way to differentiate between devices connecting as guest and devices on the regular secure wifi SSID.
There seems to be a bug in the latest firmware at the time of this review. Some settings (particularly custom device names) do not survive a power cycle. Custom router name occasionally reverts to default for no apparent reason. There doesn't appear to be a way to list all of the known devices that are not connected. This makes it difficult to configure device specific perimeters while a device is offline.
These issues are annoyances and to not limit function so only one star removed.
Seems fast. Too early to tell if it is reliable.
Fairly good, yet incomplete android app. Best I've seen for any model router.
Range is about as good as can be expected for applicable frequency (2.4GHZ is slower but penetrates walls better. 5.6GHZ is much faster, but does not penetrate walls very well). The range of a signal is not just up to your router; it is also up to your computer/phone/tablet adapter. Network communications are a two-way street. Even if your router is very powerful, if your computer adapter is not, then the connection won't be strong. Poor range is not necessarily a fault of the router.
Edit: One month in. I went to install a printer to the USB ports. It is a HP Laserjet 1505. It will not work. All directions followed. I used both the windows LPR method and the ASUS setup. Tried from multiple windows PCs. It appears to detect the printer, but all print jobs just sit in queue and never print. Further research indicates this a common problem with these routers
UPDATE SEP 2020: The router is amazing. Working perfectly after 3 years. ASUS is very recommended brand. Configuration by internet as admin uses a very good a practical software. I would purchase again
Thanks. FH

It came with no Manuel and no set up disk. I had to get Asus tech support to help and they couldn't do anything and they told me never to buy refurbished IT products as they are s total waste of time and rarely work. So, I'm sending it back for a refund. I have since bought a brand new one - same make and model and will review that later....
Pros:
-Compacto.
-Diseño.
-Buen rango.
-Muy fácil de configurar.
-Seguridad.
-Calidad de tu Internet.
Contras:
When my two good for nothing pieces of junk routers (Cisco/Linksys E series) began failing, I decided never to go back to that brand again. I am just really tired of having to deal with poor products. I took a seriously hard look at other "off brands" and just wasn't satisfied. As an avid home computer "tinkerer" I have exclusively used ASUS main boards for my gaming computers for around 20 years now. Typically, ASUS products have done very well for me. I have had the occasional lemon, but more often than not, ASUS main boards have lasted me over five years without breaking. I replace them only to get the "latest and greatest." So, I decided to spend the extra money on their routers.
I purchased both the ASUS RT-N66W and ASUS RT-N66U when they were on sale. The price tag was steep for me because I am used to spending under $60 per router, but at the rate of replacement (about twice a year) I was spending $240 per year to replace two routers every six months... no joke!
I haven't owned the ASUS RT-N66W and ASUS RT-N66U more than a couple weeks, but I already love them! They are doing exactly what they are supposed to do without any problems.
The construction on these routers feel like top quality. They are heavier than the crap-o Cisco/Linksys home products I am used to. I don't know that the better quality "feel" means the ASUS routers are going to be a better router in the long term, but I already like them because of their quality. All the hard ware connectors, lights, chassis, and antennas look and feel durable. I hope that turns out to be true!
The internal workings of both the ASUS RT-N66W and ASUS RT-N66U are pretty good. I like the interface software. It is simple and intuitive. I don't have to fuss about with the settings unless I want to. If I want to "geek out" and play with the settings, the router software is advanced enough for me to do so. However, I don't like to fuss with settings all that much, and both routers where essentially just plug and play. I set the ASUS RT-N66W to be my gateway router and set up the RT-N66U to be a wireless AP. It only took five minutes to have them set up and they worked.
What I have really appreciated about these routers is that while they do everything any other home router should do, these routers have really good signal strength in my three story home. I can even connect 60 ft. away from my home with good signal strength.
When I plugged these routers in, once they found the internet they automatically checked for firmware updates and updated. You will want to make sure to update your firmware. I think part of the reason I am not seeing problems is that the latest firmware fixed bugs some have reported about here on Amazon. Get those updates!
Both the ASUS RT-N66W and ASUS RT-N66U aren't rebooting every other hour (like some of the junk I have had in the past). The gigabit speeds really do work. They really do route IPv6 (a bonus!), they do setup DHCP nicely. I can connect USB drives and they detect them and use them albeit a little slower than I like. The DLNA and iTunes servers actually work! And... you get free DDNS from ASUS, which again, it works as advertised!
Perhaps these routers will turn out to be pieces of junk, too. I will find out in six months if I have to replace them and if that happens I will downgrade my rating. Until then, I am feeling really happy that I have two routers that are problem free at the moment and if they are half as good as ASUS main boards, then I won't have to spend another dime on a router until it is time for an upgrade!
Pros:
1) Super fast speeds and long range on 5ghz or 2.4ghz, I setup on both using the same name of network/pass so it will automatically detect the better signal.
2) Sleek design and black color blends nicely with other electronic devices
3) Easy to setup screen popped up directly on my macbook pro, and I was able to update the firmware
Cons:
1) Gets hot around the ports so to maintain coolness don't lay flat, can use the stand to elevate like in amazon pic, but stand needs additional support since it doesn't stay connected properly to the device.
2) Antennas are not exactly appealing but they do provide the necessary range to reach all bedrooms in my parents' one story house, and my apartment.
3) Firmware doesn't directly download from router page, you have to go to asus website and do a direct download. When first receiving your device I suggest uploading all firmware from website. The button on the router page falsely states that it is updated which is one of the glitches of the old firmware, but once all updates are made it will solve itself. The updates took a while with generic instructions but it was well worth it once they all were made.
Despite the few cons it does work right out of the box and loads on to the router page, when I clicked on the internet for my macbook pro. Other systems like windows you would have to check specifications or find out how to download the latest firmware through that system. I'm no expert nor do I claim to be just searched around the internet and found my answers, saw some people downloaded tomato firmware and stuff, but I just provided the way I handled the situation that was easiest for me. I downloaded all the firmware on the router through my macbook pro before giving it to my parents, and although my father had an HP with windows 7 it had no problems working on the router page with his laptop.
***Overall this is a great system for the price and no matter what updates they have made for other similar routers this is an excellent router to get you through several years of changes before they switch to AC routers and even if they do I'll stick with this. I did have my last linksys router for about 7 years so this will stand the test of time as well. It works excellent and as a suggestion it is worth it to upgrade the system so you get the full capacity of the internet speeds your paying for which in my case was Comcast blast service.
I can only vouch for the router that was purchased directly from amazon any other sellers I cannot vouch for their effectiveness in electronics. I had problems in the past purchasing electronics from other sellers so just be careful. Amazon does give you 30 days to test out the products though, and fortunately I never had to return any products purchased directly from amazon including this one.
