Fairly Blunt Book That Doesn't Quite Pack the Punch of the Real Mr. Blackwell

This is a better-than-average but dated life story of a famously difficult Hollywood fashion designer. However, it doesn't pack the punch it should have. Mr. Blackwell is famous for being blunt and demeaning, but he holds back a bit here. He is publicly gay and alludes to some very close relationships with some of Hollywood's biggest male stars but he doesn't go into any detail. There are some snide comments (he doesn't hold back when slamming Johnny Carson!) but mostly this is a book where he is trying to make himself look good. He admits his failures and how he mistreated people, then tries to change back to his original name at the end. He doesn't seem to get that we really like the fake Mr. Blackwell better than the real Richard Selzer.
With a title like this - what's not to love?

I first read this book when I was a kid, and I bought it again recently as a gift for a friend. I couldn't resist paging through it one more time, to see if it still held up. It really is candid, well-written, fun and yet poignant, and it's a true time capsule of a bygone era. I loved it, but I will say it's a tad too dense/long. I think it could have been edited down a bit, but then again maybe that's just a sign of the times (these times... when I was a kid, there wasn't so much entertainment/content available!).
