HASH(0xa0dc9ea0) out of 5 stars A Good Read That Mixes Elements of Horror, Romance, Humor, and Fantasy June 20 2011
By - Published on
Format: Paperback
Rasetsu wants to find a boyfriend, and not just for companionship. She was cursed by an evil spirit that promised to collect her on her twentieth birthday unless she finds true love.

That birthday is only a few months away at the start of volume seven. Rasetsu is a psychic who works in a business that specializes in dealing with demons and the supernatural, and two coworkers have seemed like possibilities for the "true love" thing.

Rasetsu definitely has a crush on her coworker Yako. She doesn't have a crush on her coworker Kuryu, but he's in love with her. This aspect is a little high-schooly ("I like him but I can't tell if he likes me and the guy I don't like in that way does like me and I don't know what to do about all this, etc."), but it mostly works. Yako has to tell Rasetsu he loves her, yet even then that might not change anything. What sort of evil spirit tells a person how to escape them? Yako is suspicious that finding a true love won't really solve anything. There must be something else going on.

Earlier in the manga series, Kuryu seemed like a real possibility for being the guy Rasetsu would fall for. That's no longer the case. Sometimes he acts like his old self, but at other times he's possessive, creepy, and weird. Volume seven has a flashback into his past that at first feels as if it might be there to take up space, but then it quickly shows its importance to the whole story.

Rasetsu has a rose "tattoo" on her chest that the evil spirit put there several years ago, and now more rose tattoos are appearing all over her body. Her twentieth birthday continues to draw closer, and it's more intimidating now that Yako has put holes in the evil spirit's promise to leave Rasetsu alone if she'll only find love. The final pages end just after midnight on her birthday, right before you know something big is going to happen. That's pretty much a guarantee that you have to buy volume nine because you want to know how it will all turn out.

Rasetsu is an enjoyable series, with a plucky heroine, supernatural problems, and a few clever twists. It's not a very sophisticated book, but it's not brainless, either. It's a good read that mixes elements of horror, romance, humor, and fantasy.
