Jenny Wilding Cardon has been creating with fabric since high school. Back then, she would design eccentric, rebellious items of clothing, and then make her friends wear them to school. After graduating from college in Utah with a degree in Women’s Studies, Jenny spent three years with her husband in Seattle, where she quickly caught the quilting bug from her coworkers at book publisher Martingale.

Jenny worked as a copywriter for Martingale one day short of 10 years before giving up her position to be a stay-at-home mom. In 2011, she returned to Martingale as their content editor, and now spends most of her work time writing for Martingale’s Stitch This! blog.

The birth of her first son inspired Jenny to write her first pattern collection, The Little Box of Baby Quilts (Martingale, 2007). Her second, the book ReSew (Martingale, 2011), paired her two creative outlets—thrifting and sewing. Jenny’s designs have also appeared on the covers of Quilts and More and Quilt It for Kids magazines, as well as in McCall’s Quilting and Simple

Quilts and Sewing.

Jenny lives on an acre in a Utah farming town with her husband of 18 years and their two sons, Jack and Charlie. Since the commute to the Washington-state-based Martingale office is 818.64 miles, the bosses typically allow her to work from home. Visit Jenny at RemadeNation.com.

Great ideas for repurposing thrift shop finds

If you love browsing through all thrift shops to find hidden treasures, you'll find lots of ideas of what to do with them in this book. There are over 20 patterns in this book, ranging from dresses to quilts to purses. In addition, the author gives information on shopping at thrift shops as well as information on basic sewing.
There are many detailed illustrations and photos of each project making it easy to complete them successfully. I particularly enjoyed the clothing sections as they are stylish and don't look like "repurposed" items.
This is a great book if you're into the recycling, repurposed trend.

What I am still looking for is a book that tells me how to get Thrift-Store finds to fit. This author prefers to tell you what to look for and then how to make a specific item. I did read it to get ideas but taking apart items and sewing them is almost like starting from scratch. I want to adjust existing items, not start over.

I love that this book challenges me to look at things differently. My experience in second hand stores is that I see things I like, but they aren't my size or a style that is flattering on me. This book gives me ideas after ideas on how to take these items and make them work for me.

There are 4 project in this book that I cannot wait to complete. The first one I plan to tackle is the shirred sheet dress. I have been looking for a sundress pattern and this fits the ticket! That the dress is made from sheets also thrills me as I know it will be cool and soft. Using the buttonholes from the front of a man's shirt makes buttonholing easier than a snap!

This book sounded like a great idea so I bought it for my niece, who is very creative and likes to sew. But paging through it, I am disappointed with the projects. They are simply not things a chic 20-something woman would want to wear or own. As the cover (which I didn't inspect online) illustrates, most of the skirts and dresses LOOK like they are made out of curtains or tablecloths. The clothing styles overall are boxy and dowdy. One of the handbags is OK, but overall I am afraid there is little in here, other than the basic concept of reusing thrift store materials, that my niece will find of interest.

This book is really one for our times. It encourages one to shop at thrift stores and re-sew clothing items into fun, hip outfits and even children toys and things for the home. Jenny's instructions are clear and concise. The pictures are easy to follow and all of it allows for one's own creativity in creating a "one of a kind". Jenny does a really good job of giving extra tips, such as ways to make each item your very own; deviating a little from her idea. I highly recommend the book to those who love to sew, want to go "green", and who want to save money!
