Streeter, the Denver bounty hunter who first appeared in The Low End of Nowhere (LJ 1/96), encounters a formidable enemy in the person of a known murderer released from prison on a technicality. The psychotic felon, Kevin Swallow, has vowed to kill all those connected with his imprisonment, including his lawyer?Streeter's ex-fiancee. Swallow threatens, taunts, kills?all without police or Streeter finding him?until Streeter gets a lucky break or two and teams up with a p.i. involved in the original Swallow case. Authentic action, in-depth characterization, and a nerve-wracking, cat-and-mouse plot make this a winner.

Streeter, the Denver bounty hunter and private eye who made his debut in The Low End of Nowhere , remains heroically unlucky in love. In addition to four ex-wives, Streeter has a host of former lovers, including Carol, who blamed him for the failure of her criminal-law practice and once stuck her hand in the garbage disposal and hit the switch. So when she calls Streeter to ask him to protect her from a man she once defended in a murder trial, he reluctantly agrees to help. Soon people involved in the case are being killed, and Carol's brittle stability is beginning to crack. Stone, a former journalist and now a real-life Denver private investigator, has two winning skills. He creates fascinating women for Streeter to fall for, and his criminals are both violent and dangerous yet self-destructively stupid. A Long Reach isn't quite as much fun, or as delightfully down and dirty, as its predecessor, but the dames are desirable, and one of the thugs literally shoots himself in the foot.
