Product Description

It is the 1991 September school year, and in Wessex, England, Joe Crosthwaite is preparing for what he hopes will be his final year at St. Christopher's boarding school for boys. Tired of the environment, the Clique, the bullies and the food, Joe believes the time has come to move on and face the real world.

But as the autumn leaves begin to fall, a tragedy strikes. The body of a ten-year-old boy is discovered on the infamous Red Road. As the hunt begins for the killer and the school does what it can to keep its reputation and the boys safe, Joe realises that successfully completing his GCSEs might not be the only thing standing between him and his plans for the future.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just okay Aug. 17 2014

This is labeled as a mystery, so that's what I was expecting. It started out just fine with a young boy named Joe who goes to school at an all boy boarding school called St. Christopher's finding a dead body of another young boy while running in gym class one day. From there I got lost. The middle of the book was long and drawn out. There was very little about the murder and centered more around Joe and his friends growing up.There was another murder, this time of two boys of the school and again it wasn't all that prominent in the book.
The ending was the best part although it was fairly easy to know who the murderer was once they were introduced into the book.
If the book could have been shorter and less drawn out, if there was more emphasis put on the actual murders and what the murderer was thinking and feeling and less about Joe and growing up, this book would have been much better and probably gotten a 4 star review from me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad June 29 2013

The book was a good read but very drawn out. I found myself skipping through parts that were to me unnecessary rambling. It would have been much better as a short story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reminds me of Knowles' A SEPARATE PEACE, a book i love! June 5 2013

I don't review many books, but i have to give this author lots of credit for developing an environment at the boarding school that was very realistic to those of us who have not been to one. I did not guess the murderer: i had at least three in mind, no one tipping the hand to be called predictable. Early on, we did not know the motive, because, alas, we did not know if it were a pedophile or not. I enjoyed this book. I usually read about 7 books at a time, switching when i get bored. Not here. I was busy gathering smidgens of clues when the author offered them. I heartily recommend this book. It is not "another cheap mystery," but is closer to a quality, character-developed, novel like A SEPARATE PEACE that drives the reader to analyze, analyze to find the murderer.

Interesting read. The author could have told the same story in less words, I buy books based on story value not on word count.
