I'm not going to discuss the books storyline that much. I will say read it yourself, it's well worth your time.
I'm finding this review quite difficult as this is not the type of story that I'd normally read. What has captured me is Mr. Freemans skills as a storyteller. He is one of the good ones and he drew me in from cynical disdain to buying the next book in the series in just a few hundred pages. Way to go.
I happily place Mike Freeman on my list (fairly short) of competent authors that will provide a quality read

HASH(0xa63365a0) out of 5 stars A solid debut May 30 2011

If the Stainless Steel Rat were the lead character in Alastair Reynolds' "Revelation Space" series, you'd end up with something like "Redemption Protocol". Fun and fast-paced, but perhaps too many different ideas crammed into one book, without all of them being properly developed. The book begins with a large cast of characters, and I braced myself for the mental effort needed to keep track of them all. However, in the bloodbath that follows, the ensemble cast is quickly whittled down to a manageable number and the story then gets going. The ending is nowhere as stunning and breathtaking as other reviewers suggest, but is certainly worth the 700 pages needed to get to it. I'll be interested to see what Mike Freeman comes up with next.

HASH(0xa63367ec) out of 5 stars Brilliant find, Great read! April 4 2011

Intricate plotting and characters, and a brilliant ending that I found to be quite inspiring!

Careful though, along the way are some terrifying situations, gripping suspense and stomach wrenching brutality. My God, that scene in the shuttle near the end, I was on the edge of my seat... Horrifying and desperate!

The book really hits the ground running - it has a great beginning that shows Havoc's powerful motivation and sets the stage for the story. Amongst the intrigue is a lot of subtle setting up that pay off later - I think I missed some of this first time and will read it again. Once you reach the dinner all bets are off! The momentum just builds and builds. You keep thinking it can't sustain the pace but it builds even more!

I agree with the review about it being like a hollywood movie in a sense, you can see it. Except the story is better, the characters are better and the whole story really moves you. If the ending doesn't move you - you're dead!

It takes a genre that is often hackneyed and cliched and makes it gritty, believable and exciting. I loved it, and thoroughly recommend it!

HASH(0xa63367b0) out of 5 stars Decent action and imagination, characters and writing not so great Aug. 8 2011

I found it quite entertaining, but it was let down by some dodgy writing, and shallow and uninteresting characters. The cluedo style murder mystery stuff wore thin really quick, because I didn't care who half of the characters were, and most of their deaths didn't really matter for the story anyway. Anyone who was developed a little more and was influential in the story turned out to be unrealistic and corny. The sci-fi/technology stuff was good, and the action was well done and kept me reading to the end.

HASH(0xa6336aa4) out of 5 stars Epic Read March 29 2011
By TriggerHappy - Published on Amazon.com

All I can say is that it had me hooked from the first line. The story follows Havoc's betrayal and the subsequent perilous contact mission, drawing you inevitably towards its gripping conclusion. Danger lurks everywhere and no-one can be trusted. Its suspenseful, scary and thrilling.

This book would make a great action film, and I can't wait for the sequel.

HASH(0xa6336f90) out of 5 stars Epic no-holds-barred sci-fi thriller, highly recommended! April 6 2011
By T. Benjamin - Published on Amazon.com

Right from the cleverly-constructed opening scenes, this book grabs you and doesn't let go until, 600-odd action-packed pages later, you reach the only disappointment of the whole story: you're left wanting even more.

Essentially a tale of betrayal and - as you can guess from the title - subsequent redemption, "Redemption Protocol" is an action / thriller sci-fi epic. It's epic in scale and effect rather than in aeons of time - you can easily imagine this book being made into an all-guns-blazing Hollywood special effects extravaganza, with a grim-faced ass-kicking (anti)hero and at least 3 glamorously ass-kicking lady co-stars. I found the book to have everything you'd expect from the genre - a riveting story, a main character you want to see win against insurmountable odds, villains you want to see meet a grisly end, sexy (and not cringey) encounters, violent "make your eyes water" fight scenes, space on a grand scale, and cool alien technology.

"Redemption Protocol" may be "sci-fi" but it doesn't get bogged down in sciencey techno-babble, though you feel reassured that the author has done his homework and it doesn't feel (too) implausible for a futuristic thriller. I thoroughly enjoyed the read, and as I said at the beginning, my only disappointment was to be left at the end wanting more, more, more! - Recommended.
