I haven't been able to truly appreciate the power of my Blu-Ray player until I watched this movie. Quiet simply, the visuals alone make this a five star product. The animation and detail is truly spellbinding, especially when you take into account the amount of creative characters and vehicles that had to be designed.

Plot and story don't really mean much in a movie that's really all about crazy characters racing crazy cars on a crazy planet, and while this will probably upset some people, that doesn't make it all any less enjoyable for me. It was a fun movie and that's all that matters to me.

Redline is one of those rarities in a modern anime movie. A completely hand drawn animated movie with no CGI in it whatsoever! It looks fantastic and sounds even better! There's nothing even remotely realistic about it; but that doesn't matter as it's all about non-stop action and bigger (waaaaay bigger) than life characters! That's it!

As for the plot, there basically isn't one. It's simply an excuse to do the sort of old school anime that you don't see that often anymore. The movie can be basically broken down into three parts. The first part starts out with a slam bang race that introduces you to the main character JP who just wants to race all out and his basic love interest and rival Sonoshee. Done old school style, that means huge manes of hair, the wildest vehicles you've ever seen and bulging eyeballs. It's that sort of show.

It then drops into the second part which then introduces you to all the other main characters who will appear in the Redline Race and the military government that's determined to stop them no matter what the cost. What little humour there is appears in this middle part. And then there's the last 40 min. part which is the Redline itself which is part Deathrace, part Mad Max and part Speed Racer and which contains every anime cliché in the books amped up to the absolute max! It's quite a ride!

The audio on the Bluray is Dolby True HD 5.1 in both English and Japanese with a top notch dub done by Bang Zoom. And the video is state of the art 1080P in a 1:78.1 widescreen presentation.

There are only three extras, all Japanese. The original 2006 trailer which must have been made as a teaser since nothing in it appears in the actual movie but deserves to be seen just for it's own sake.

There were a lot of 5 star reviews for Redline so I decided to take a chance and buy the Blu Ray. When I first watched anime many years ago, I watched it for the action, thrills and excitement that North American cartoons could not provide. These days, most of the anime I watch are more contemplative and thought provoking, filled with story, wonder, and amazement. It seems Redline tries to be the anti-Miyazaki anime. Everything is either frenetic adrenaline, or in its quiet moments, Cowboy Bebop-esque jazzy cool. It has a cool original art style and the entire thing is hand animated impressively. However, the show just didn't click with me as much as I had hoped it would.

The plot seems exciting - everyone wants to win the Redline race, a no-holds barred futuristic racing event which is taking place on a dangerous planet. Should be cool, right? But some of the characters are downright strange and though some seemed interesting, some were underdeveloped... these are some strange character designs... gorilla cop, weird steampunk cyborg, magical fairy queen with omnipotent powers, twin pop stars, and weird looking aliens. I think the character designs were a bit too over the top for me.

The action, when it was on screen, was pretty good. Other than the Deathrace 2000 / Twisted Metal cars shooting one another, there wasn't a whole lot of action/violence - just a couple of fight scenes and a short shoot 'em up near the end. However, the opening race sequence set to some really cool techno music was almost worth the price of admission and had me grinning from ear to ear. Likewise, much of the ending race sequence was pretty cool.

You really don't need to be into racing to enjoy this. I don't care too much for racing shows of any type, but this! This is something special. The Blu ray quality is beautiful, the races are amazing and literally action packed thorough out. I stumbled on this online, watched it and was so blown away by not only the picture clarity, but just the entire thing, I just had to own it. It's starts out with a race and ends with even more amazing race. JP is the main character and we first see him racing from the start along with some odd looking guys. In this anime aliens are a common sight and the humans look like the minority here, lol. But what at first seems like a normal race soon turn into a race for survival as well as for first place, basically anything goes, from missiles launched from your cars, to well, I don't know if anything can top that, but watch and find out. The qualifiers of this race get a trip to Red Line, the greatest event in the racing world and his held once every 5 or so years. It is soon announced after the end of the opening race that the Red Line will be held on Robo World, a world of "progressive humanity", only thing is Robo world have no intention of allowing Red Line on their planet, but the race will happen anyhow. Some racers drop out because Robo World are a fierce military type of planet, so with them gunning for the racers, as well as them gunning for each other, the race for not only JP's life, but everyone else's is about to be even tougher. This is just an amazing anime and the best Blu ray i've ever seen, in terms of picture clarity. I definitely recommend this.
