Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

In his fourth book, Christian pastor Buchanan delves into the concept of the Sabbath, by which he means both a day and an attitude. He campaigns persuasively for readers to revive the Sabbath as a refuge from our pervasive and spiritually destructive culture of busyness. Buchanan's prose is fresh and immediate, earnest and self-effacing at the same time. Each chapter is peppered with vivid stories from his own childhood and ministries as well as insightful retellings of biblical narratives. Each chapter also ends with a practicum the author calls a "Sabbath liturgy"—something to try out like choreographic notes, "not to be followed slavishly." Indeed, these invitations to put his ideas on living the Sabbath into action are not PowerPoint-style bulleted lists, but brief narrative passages spiced with more stories and engaging insights. The book can be taken as a whole or read piecemeal as rejuvenating brief sermons. It will aid those Christians looking to step off the hamster wheel of modern working lifestyles and find the rest of God—not just "actual physical, mental, spiritual rest, but also the rest of God—the things of God's nature and presence we miss in our busyness." This was a very formative book in my view of Sabbath and rest. Mark Buchanan uses language that is rich and descriptive; the kind of language that makes you slow down to read and enjoy the pace of his insights. The exercise of reading the book itself is one of savouring and slowly digesting how God designed our rhythms (work and rest).

What was particularly eye opening to me was Mark Buchanan's description of work. The early chapters paint a picture of work as necessarily flawed because of the world's distance from God plan and design. Originally even work was once meant to be restful and filling. Work done with care, gratitude and excellence can be an act of praise in and of itself.

Mark Buchanan also shares an interesting idea about physical rest in the form of sleep. Sleep, he explains, is an ultimate act of vulnerability and trust. We can only push through for so long before we have to sleep. Buchanan suggests a better way is to willingly enter into rest, into sleep as an admission of our need for refreshing from the God who designed our physical bodies to need sleep.

I have and will continue to recommend this book to family and friends who are seeking a better rhythm than that of relentless pursuit followed by an inevitable crash.

I am currently in the middle of reading this great book. It is so helpful for me right now, considering I am a mechinal engineering student who works part-time and is still involved in various activities. It is teaching me that Sabbath is more than a day, more than leisure time or even just reading the Bible. Sabbath is indeed a day, but it's also an attitude. It is so important to develop a Sabbath heart and make rest a priority, not just leftovers in one's schedule.

And also noteworthy is that the Rest of God is definitely rooted in Scripture, and is complimented by Mark's life experience and personal struggle with rest and work.

I highly recommend this book to anybody, but especially those who are feeling worn out and whose relationships with God and others are perhaps threadbare.

I was so grateful to have "The Rest of God" by Mark Buchanan recommended to me just before I went away on holidays this summer. It proved to rescue my holidays and teach me some much needed things about what rest really means. As a leader it is so easy to make other things a priority, but I came to realize some errors in my thinking and understanding as I read this book. Thank you Mark for learning, and sharing this very needed insight!

This is one of my favourite books written on the Sabbath. It is so practical and yet not burdensome. I did not walk away from reading this feeling overwhelmed by more "rules" or guilty for not practicing the Sabbath in a specific way. Buchanan gives insightful and biblical thoughts on how to live out the Sabbath in a way that sets you free and truly experience the rest of God.

Read this for a small group book and I was utterly refreshed and encourage by it. I haven't read a book quite like it. For anyone who feels like they'll never be able to actually slow down/rest/spend time with God, this is a GREAT resource. Thanks so much for writing this!
