5.0 out of 5 stars Happy to have owned it! April 3 2014
By Eduardo Hernandez - Published on
I just recently started searching for independent DVD companies because those are the ones that tend to have the most bizarre forgotten horror gems. A couple of months ago I found out about Code Red. The first DVD I saw that they had advertised on their website was this film. So three months later I decide to finally buy it straight from the DVD company itself.

Boy am I happy with this purchase overrall. The movie is great. The story is about George Millar, a painter who attempted to commit suicide on Halloween and was revived by the paramedics. What he doesn't realize was that when he was revived, someone or something else has come back with him, and is now possessing his body as well. That's all you need to know until you watch it. This movie just oozes with that 80's charm. The atmosphere is extremely colorful, full of neon lights EVERYWHERE. I've heard it been called cheezy but I found it too be quite charming. Most horror movies I watch trudge along with a weak plot but make up for it in the kills. This one only has a few kills and frankly while they are impressive, and crazy, they are not gory. Yet it doesn't take away from it. I was more involved in the story, and how George was gonna combat this situation he was in. The story is great, with characters I actually cared for. These characters all had this bit of innocence that made them all extremely likeable. There wasn't any atrocious acting that took away from this story, mostly good, and decent performances. The director seemed like he knew what he was doing, and had some pretty cool shots in the movie, and used the neon lights with pure awesomeness. This movie didn't exactly scare me, and it didn't even scare my younger brothers, yet I could tell when they were kind of creeped out, so don't expect a HUGE scarefest. And while there is gore, there isnt any nudity, which is something a lot of bad horror movies rely on but I didn't notice it was missing till writing this review! Great movie, and I'm happy it finally got a DVD release from Code Red.

Now onto the DVD itself. The picture is fine with a faint Grindhouse feel to it since there is a bit of damage in some scenes but nothing that takes away from the film. The colors popped out nicely, and I had no trouble understanding the audio. There was one part in the movie where it paused for a quick second like it was a defect or something and I replayed to see if it would happen, and it did. It doesn't bother me much because it was a quick second and that was it, and I'm not sure if it's isolated to just my disc or all discs. Sadly the DVD contains no subtitles which something I do appreciate a lot when movies are released but I understand Code Red isn't that rich. The extras include trailers from other Code Red titles, Retribution's trailers, a few image stills, the director's commentary (have not listened to it) and it shows the scenes that had to be cut for a R rating (which frankly just rely more on staying on the shot than anything else). Nothing that I'd be too interested in but I'm happy enough with the movie itself. I suggest 80's horror movie fans buy it. It's amazing, get either from Code Red's official stie, or from The Exterminator here on Amazon (which I've heard is the only official store that sells Code Red dvds, but I'm not sure)

Guy Magar knows how to make a movie. Retribution is a must have for anyone who likes 80s horror. I heard about this release a couple years ago and couldn't get it from the Code Red store when it first came out fortunately Amazon had it. It's a bit pricey but totally worth the money considering no other company has the rights to it and it probably won't get another release. So get it while you can, out of all the Code Red releases so far this is one of the best.
