I recommend this book to those who like classical literature from 18th-19th century because of its style. The novel is filled with the detailed descriptions of places, buildings, interior designs as a part of the intriguing story. I could swear the author(s) had this very same dog himself, because of the described details of its adventures and behavior. This is a historical detective story, but what makes this book truly outstanding is the attention to the details and the charming language and style. Great to know that the book was written by a professional historian, so the atmosphere of that epoque is most likely accurate. I would like to visit Bath now and walk around with this book! It is really an amazing beautifully written combination of a detective story, historical novel, social realism and even a travel guide.

One of my favourite genres is historical fiction, especially with a focus on murder mysteries. I use these books not only as entertainment, but also to spark my interest in history. This book is not exactly a murder mystery, but does contain all of the elements that I like. The historical setting is 1830'3 Britain, which is a period I did not know a lot about, but this book has really brought this period to life for me. It was a time of great political unrest and change, not only in Britain but in Europe. This book captures the atmosphere perfectly, and I would recommend it most highly to all lovers of this genre.

A good readReviewed in the United Kingdom on March 10, 2019
An excellent novel that brings the nineteenth century to life. The author shows an indepth knowledge of 1830 Bath and Bristol while making the characters real. There is a good story line that grips the reader's attention.
