Chapter One
Monster A Precursor For Illness
it’s difficult to say when my dance with the mental illness devil began. I think back to being around four years old, when I had this thing about holding the doors
open for people. It was almost like a contest with myself to see how much I could do it and how helpful I could be. “I will, I will!” But now I’m wondering if I was opening the door to something terrible, dark and unseen, something that would almost destroy my life – and certainly change it forever.
And it was invisible. I’m sure that had I been able to see it, I would have slammed the door shut, even at four years old. If it had claws, a long scaly tail, terrible teeth, angry eyes, mouth breathing stinking fire…yes, I like to think that even at that tender age, my instinct would have been to stop it coming in.

A heartfelt message
The Road To Mental Wellness, was an attempt to crawl out of the darkness and away from the debilitating symptoms of PTSD. At the time, I had little help, I was off work and was lost...."I am my work; I am a firefighter!" I said to myself.; utterly convinced that my life had lost its meaning and hence, void of purpose. So, I began to obsessively write out where I had gone wrong. I Deval into my troubled childhood, my depressive teenaged years and pondered what happened in my young adult life. What I found along the way, was a live-long battle with depression, anxiety and PTSD. What I found was, with each word I carefully tapped out on my archaic and outdated keyboard, was a step towards rediscovering my purpose... Helping others continues to be my passion!
Within the pages of my book, you may find your way again. At least this is the hope. Many who have read it, tell me that it's done just that; Please know that mental illness isn't the end, but maybe, its a brand-new beginning.

- Reviewed in Canada on October 23, 2021Verified PurchaseI loved how the Author brought us in and out of his childhood. I love how he addressed how mental illness often starts as a child and quite often goes unnoticed until it becomes an issue. I too experienced a traumatic grade school, as a female growing up in the mid 80's early 90's, with adhd (undiagnosed) I was placed at the back of the class and often made to feel stupid and a burden. I remember more specifically, in grade 5 when I began to struggle in math. I was a bit more behind than the rest of my class and because of this my teacher made me sit in back, facing the wall so I couldn't distract other students, working on work sheets that were a lot easier than I was capable of doing. They made me feel so stupid. The Authors experiences in grade school were like mine. I appreciate how the Author highlights the fact that the education system is not designed for the kids that may need a little extra support, and how often behaviours are overlooked and instead of finding the reason for the behaviour they just give out negative consequences. Like the Author I too experienced self esteem problems because of this treatment, feelings of being stupid and a burden to the Teachers. I find it interesting that I too developed Anxiety, could the failing of the school system have brought this on?? If you are looking to read a book that really highlights a genuine raw and real depiction of what it's like to live with mental illness, then look no further this is your book.

- Reviewed in Canada on April 23, 2022Captivating. Heartfelt. A must read. You feel his struggles with him. It's eye opening and makes you realize that so many people are struggling. So many people need help but don't know where to go or who to turn to. Jonathan's journey is about not giving up. Fighting for your rights and your mental health. I highly recommend reading this book. And I hope that one day we'll have another one of his books to read. Very well written
- Reviewed in Canada on November 17, 2021I wake up in the morning and I am thankful for my new day. I choose to fill my day with as much positivity as I can. I live to the fullest!
Reading this very brave and bold effort by Jonathan Arenburg, showed me that not all men (people) are as lucky as I am to live free of mental health illnesses, like depression, anxiety, and so much more. Jonathan has constructed a novel of gripping drama with scenarios of heartache and struggle , to amusing quips , tidbits and periodic humor to lay himself out there for an audience to understand mental health and all it's areas. This book is a prime example of how we can break down the stigma of the mental health struggles in men, and those who feel it's not the 'right thing to do' to discuss their struggles. Bravo to Jonathan for telling his story. I highly recommend this book as both a way to teach/ educate someone about mental health and wellness and also as a tool of awareness that it does exist. This novel is a struggle to get through in some spots because of the subject matter, but no where close to the actual struggles of it's authors! Thank you Jonathan for this staggering, heartfelt and courageous book!
