The Road to Wigan Pier is a book by the British writer George Orwell, first published in 1937. The first half of this work documents his sociological investigations of the bleak living conditions amongst the working class in Lancashire and Yorkshire in the industrial north of England before World War II. The second half is a long essay on his middle-class upbringing, and the development of his political conscience, questioning British attitudes towards socialism. Orwell states plainly that he himself is in favour of socialism; but feels it necessary to point out reasons why many people who would benefit from socialism, and should logically support it, are in practice likely to be strong opponents.

A note about this kindle edition, there are frequent minor typos. Published by Numitor Comun and no publisher information given beyond the name appearing on the cover.
From the lusciously ugly descriptiveness of the opening chapter, where Orwell describes the rooming house of the Barkers which sounds like a truly dreadful place to have to stay, to his descriptions of the lives of the coal miners, the way they work (and don’t work), the places they live in, the food they live on, their mannerisms, smells and all those details of life. These parts are quite evocative and moving. And Orwell’s attempts to get to know the working class, how difficult that was (partly because of himself, not them).
The book progresses from descriptions of the ills experienced by the working classes in England in the 1930’s, to what Orwell sees as the solution: socialism. Though it isn’t that simple, since Orwell sees problems with socialism, primarily the socialists themselves. Namely those who really have little contact with or sympathy for the working class and are only interested in the working class as far as it fits their own agenda.
Also interesting is Orwell’s definition of socialism: liberty and justice. Not what most would define it as, but it gives a very good insight into the values that underlie the author’s sympathy for the working class at the time he wrote this.
Orwell’s association of socialism with mechanical progress sounds questionable now. And he sees softness and degeneration as being a negative consequence of socialism, but this seems to have been the consequence of economic advancement in all countries.
Orwell’s writing is much more effective when he writes as an observer of human behavior rather than as a political commentator (those sections really come across as dated and pedantic). But the best parts of this book make reading at least half of it worthwhile.

Amazing surprise, flawed ebook

I know that I stumbled upon this book because I had just read Orwell's two famous novels, Animal Farm and 1984. However, if you'd approached me from another angle and asked me why I - a predominantly fantasy/SciFi fiction nerd - continued to read a book about early 20th century coal mining practices, working class living conditions, political commentary on Fascism, Socialism, and Communism, and all the warts in between....

I am as surprised as you! But it was a very enjoyable read, indeed, in some ways as fantastical world as Tolkien to my own. At the same time, issues plaguing Orwell's time still plague our modern discourse, albeit under slightly different names or banners. His criminally short analysis of the death spiral of mechanization is nothing short of fascinating, and I wonder what he would have to say about the world of 2017 and beyond.

On the ebook itself, it seems a partly flawed or corrupt copy. It had a lot of typos and issues on both my Kindle and Moon+ apps. I recommend seeking out an alternate copy. My rating is based on the content alone, but don't skip this part!

A Gripping Account Of English Industrial Workers

Orwell decides to leave his comfortable life in middle class southern England. He sets out to see for himself, the living conditions of industrial northern England. The first half of the book, examines Orwell`s observations in northern England.

The details of life in an industrial slum are rather disturbing. The over crowding, poverty, and unsanitary conditions, all make for a rather grim story. Orwell also describes all the various characters, he encounters along the way. Orwell then visits an operating coal mine. The working conditions of the coal mine, go beyond anything I have ever read before. In fact the coal mine description alone, makes this book worth buying.

The second half of the book is Orwell`s political analysis. Orwell is a dedicated socialist, but always provides both sides of the argument. He also discusses the various Communist and Fascist movements, that are taking place in the late 1930s time period. One can not help wondering, what Orwell would have thought about socialism, if he had lived a little bit longer. In the 1960s England required several IMF bailouts. England`s economy was essentially a socialistic basket case.

Overall this was a great read, from one of the England`s greatest authors.

This is a harrowing book covering Orwell's sojourn with Lancashire miners in the 1930's. Orwell was a keen observer of the human condition and tells of his experiences in a journalistic style without sentiment. All 21st century teenagers should read this. There are those alive born into it, it is not so long ago.

This book really describes the hard times in Great Britain. George Orwell (real name Eric Blair) was just an amazing writer, so regardless of the story, just reading his literature is quite captivating. The book size is slightly big and flat, which I didn't quite like.
