Product Description

From Booklist

A basic introduction to geology and paleontology, this predominantly pictorial treatment will lure newcomers to the subjects. Baiting the hook are a series of ancient-life illustrations depicting creatures from different segments of geologic time, from the Cambrian period forward. Accompanied by photographs of modern living descendants, the graphical design is immediately appealing and implicitly stresses a chain-of-being concept. Coenraads presents the essential facts of how fossils are formed, how rocks are formed, and how plate tectonics work. His popular point: "With a little skill and knowledge, it is not difficult to read and interpret the rocky pages of Earth's history." While not writing a field manual, Coenraads explains what people on a rock-hunting field trip should look for and opens their imaginations to the former environmental conditions that the discoveries of a fossil, rock, or mineral will conjure. A science work perfectly suited for general use. Gilbert Taylor

Engaging story of Earth's history... I have read many books of this genre, but this book's journey through time was the best yet. (Deb McNabney The Science Teacher)

The panoramic photographs of stunning landscapes and close-up cross-sections of gems and fossils are so gorgeous that the volume could easily stand alone as an art book... The amazing remnants of life long ago can reveal our planet's secrets... This book is an excellent place to begin. (Kim Zach VOYA)

Copious color photographs and excellent diagrams... A very useful volume for the rockhound and student of earth science. (Bob Jones Rock and Gem)

The predominantly pictorial treatment will undoubtedly lure newcomers... the graphical design is immediately appealing... explains what people on a rock-hunting field trip should look for, and opens their imaginations to the former environmental conditions that the discoveries of a fossil, rock, or mineral will conjure. (Gilbert Taylor Booklist 2005-09-01)

A treat for browsers as well as a useful reference work and a fine introduction to the substances and materials we walk on. (Globe and Mail 2005-08-06)

Wonderfully intense color photographs of rocks, fossils, and landscapes... As a public school teacher I highly recommend Rocks and Fossils for any student and also for anyone interested in earth sciences. For the money it's like getting several books in one. (Kyle Hester Bloomsbury Review)

I can think of no other book about rocks and fossils in particular and geology in general that has more visual appeal than this 300-page volume from Robert Coenraads. (Thomas A. Stone Science Books and Films)

Rocks & Fossils: A Visual Guide is exactly what the title says -- a visual guide. It has hundreds of color rich photos.... [and] is beautiful and extensive book that will be appreciated by the browser and helpful for student projects.... It also has a reasonable price. (Arlene Baker INFOLINK 2007-06-30)

A truly beautiful book that deals with not only rocks and fossils but everything and anything that comes close to them. The formation of Planet Earth and the development of life on it; the origins of the various rocks and where they can be found; land-forms on Earth and how they got there; even gemstones and their properties, and the myths surrounding them... it's all in this lavishly illustrated volume. The only drawback to the book is the very tiny print in the extensive Factfile at the end, but that is offset by the truly gorgeous photos and detailed drawings that make this a joy to read. A coffee-table book that contains much information that is rarely found in one volume. (Roberta Rogow INFOLINK 2010-06-30)

HASH(0x9db2cfe4) out of 5 stars Beautiful and functional book. Jan. 19 2008

This is one of the most beautiful books on minerals and fossils that I've ever seen. In addition there is easy to read and understand information though out. I liked it so much I sent a copy to a family member for a gift. Well worth it for anyone who likes the beautiful examples of the natural world or who wants basic Earth Science info. This is not meant to be a total resource but it is a pleasure to read or just look at the pictures!

I checked this out of the library and liked it so much I have to buy a copy. There is a mass of information on a broad spectrum of minerals and it is chocked full of great photos and illustrations. Would also make a great coffee table book.

HASH(0x9db2f1ec) out of 5 stars Great photos, but book's organization is a mess! Feb. 26 2011
By Jerome Szpila - Published on
Format: Hardcover
I loved the visual displays in this book. The photos, diagrams, and charts were stunning! However, I found this book to be utterly disappointing overall. It reads like a children's book - much like the DK series - and is terribly organized. There's very little on rocks in the book - there's easily as much about evolution and biology. It also jumps from topic to topic and some of the pages seem as if they don't fit. While still fairly interesting, I don't think I'd ever be able to use it as a resource because most of the information is hard to find. If you want excellent photos with better organization, try the DK/google E-guide. For more in-depth information, try The Field Guide to Geology. Read this after those two if you are still interested.
