The RØDE VideoMic Pro is a true shotgun microphone designed for use with camcorders, DSLR cameras and portable audio recorders as a source of primary and reference audio. At the heart of the VideoMic Pro is an all-new 1/2" condenser capsule that provides broadcast-quality audio via a 3.5mm mini jack connector (outputting the mono signal to both left and right channels) with an incredibly low self-noise of just 14db. A super-cardioid polar pattern ensures that surrounding audio is minimized, and your recording is focused on the subject in front of the camera.

Rode VideoMic Pro
Compact Directional On-Camera Microphone with Rycote Lyre Shockmount
The RØDE VideoMic Pro is a true shotgun microphone designed for use with camcorders, DSLR cameras and portable audio recorders as a source of primary and reference audio. The VideoMic pro is battery powered, and provides over 70 hours recording from a single 9V battery. The RØDE VideoMic is designed and made in Australia, and covered by RØDE Microphones' industry leading 10 year warranty.
At the heart of the VideoMic Pro is an all-new 1/2-inch condenser capsule that provides broadcast-quality audio via a 3.5 millimeter minijack connector (outputting the mono signal to both left and right channels) with an incredibly low self-noise of just 14db. A super-cardioid polar pattern ensures that surrounding audio is minimised, and your recording is focused on the subject in front of the camera.
The integrated Rycote Lyre based shock mounting system separates the VideoMic Pro capsule and electronics from its mount, providing isolation from external physical factors that may cause unwanted rumble and vibrations in the microphone. Constructed from a single piece of hard-wearing thermoplastic, the Lyre provides superior acoustic suspension to traditional elastic solutions, and will never wear out, sag or snap.

Easily accessible on the rear face of the microphone are the power, filter and level controls. In addition to the microphone's native 40Hz-20kHz response a selectable high-pass filter at 80Hz is available, which will prevent low end noise such as air conditioners and traffic from being recorded.
Below these controls are the level settings, which attenuate or boost the recorded level as required. The -10dB level attenuation (or PAD) is ideal for recording loud sound sources, such as live music, motorsport, or interviews where the subject is very close to the camera. The +20dB level boost is designed for use with DSLR cameras, allowing the user to reduce the camera's preamp level (or mic-input level), effectively reducing the amount of noise generated by the camera's comparatively low quality audio circuitry.
The microphone uses a standard sized shoe mount for on camera use, and features a 3/8-inch thread in the base of the mount for easy boom pole mounting.

For some reason there is the occasional moment where the mic records a strong amount of static/noise, but those are few and very far between. Also, please note that this won't work on your DSLR if it doesn't have TRRS support.
Before purchasing, I was a little hesitant about the cost, but it has certainly proven its worth. One final thing to note is that you can get 3.5mm TRRS extension cables, connect them between this mic and your phone, and attach the mic to a pole for a makeshift boom mic. They have to be TRRS, though. Otherwise it won't work.
I struggle to think of a situation where this mic would be better than a lav mic, but it sounded pretty good when you got it about 1 foot away from your mouth. I love the new improvements over the regular videomic pro, but this thing is massive. It dwarfs my Panasonic G85, and there were no real sound improvements over the last generation mic. It's just the features like the lithium battery and auto shut off that make this a superior mic.
I'd be open to buying it again, but I sent it back. Rode told me that they are releasing a new wind screen especially for this mic. It's a shame they didn't release it at the same time as the mic. I'm moving to Thailand and can't wait.
The Rode VideoMicro microphone is a very good quality microphone which provides very good entry-level audio to improve upon your camera's stock microphones.
The product is compact and does the job, but is somewhat a nuisance to store without taking the shock and fuzzie off of it every time.
A few of the con's with this product's design are mostly the way that the fuzzie and microphone itself are mounted to the shock mount. The microphone itself sits nicely into and very securely into the shock mount but if you are not careful, the fuzzie will slide off the microphone and has the potential to be lost. There is a bevel in the microphone's design for the fuzzie's mounting ring to sit into, but it is often difficult to know when you have seated it correctly. If you try to apply the fuzzie to the microphone before you put it on the shock mount, the hairs will get caught between the microphone and the shock mount clip, causing them to shed off when you pull the fuzzie off again. This is no big deal however, and I recommend that everyone double checks the microphone fuzzie to make sure that it is clipped onto the microphone properly and securely.
I do recommend this product, however I do not recommend purchasing it for a GoPro Hero 5, as the steps you need to take to practically use it (Between mounting it to the camera, and getting the expensive microphone adapter.) are quite unrewarding.
Well, what a difference this mike makes! There is no mistaking that this is a top notch mike, I just wish that the 3/8 slot was 1/4, but, no problem I picked up an adapter screw and all is well.
If your looking yo buy just one mike, this is the one.
