Carsey-Werner messed up big-time back in 2005 when they gave Anchor Bay cut prints to work with for "Roseanne"s debut season on DVD. I am very grateful to the wonderful people at Mill Creek for releasing such a reasonably-priced set with all the S1 episodes uncut as they originally aired on ABC. While this was one of the weaker seasons IMO due to the fact that Roseanne was still in "stand-up" mode and would crack a big grin right after delivering a punchline, Goodman, Metcalf and the kids are already running on all cylinders here. To boot, we get a young George Clooney as Booker, as well as a terrific season-finale where Roseanne in full Norma-Rae mode, leads a revolt against the system as she and her friends walk out on their dead-end factory jobs.

And while I was hoping for cover art featuring a S1 pic (Rosey with the long curly hair and sweatshirt with the sleeves pushed up), at least they used a S2 pic, which is better than the S4 pic Anchor Bay used on their original S1 set.

For a little over ten bucks, this set is well worth re-buying. The bonus features that appeared on the Anchor Bay set will also be included, which is good news for those who want to unload their old S1 sets on eBay or used video stores, etc.

The discs themselves are housed in black paper sleeves, like most budget-priced Mill Creek releases, in a black snapcase. It's not the greatest way to package them, but at this price one can't complain.

As American reviews on Amazon.com were nice enough to point out before I purchased this DVD, this release contains not the original versions of the show, but those aired in syndication. The difference is that, while Canadian networks are usually nice enough to air original versions of shows, often American networks edit them down by a few minutes to be able to greedily make more money from more advertizing time. This is a huge disservice to fans of this great show. I read on [...] about this same travesty occurring with The Cosby Show Season 1
I don't know about you, but I resent it when companies do this sort of thing. In order to force companies to reissue this season in a proper way, I'm going to do my part in not buying it. If there are enough of us, they'll be forced to make a financially-interested decision to do so. Maybe the real Rosanne Barr could help out, too!

I docked 2 stars for the packaging. The 3 DVDs come in slips of paper, in a really weirdly designed thick DVD case that holds them. I've never seen packaging like it. With just 3 discs, I don't see why they didn't go with something else. Even a regular sized DVD case would have worked fine.

As you'd imagine, the paper slips you put the DVDs in aren't ideal. On my first time watching them they got scratched just taking them out of the paper slips. It's really disappointing.

The extras are nice, bloopers are always awesome in Sitcoms like this. I can't speak for whether or not this is or isn't the edited/unedited version since I was a baby when the show premiered so have no memory of the original. However, Season 1 is enjoyable as it is (edited or not). If it weren't for the packaging I'd have given this a 5 star rating.

This turned out to be a terrible quality. The CD has lines all over it and does not play well.

I absolutely love this show. It was brilliant for the first 5 seasons, still pretty good in seasons 6 and 7 but by season 8 the show was sagging and who could forget the terrible 9th season. It didn't bother me how the series ended (like it bothered so many others.) I actually understood why it ended like that and was glad that the whole lottery thing was only Roseanne writing a book and that they HADN'T actually won the lottery. Roseanne did it her way no matter what anybody else thought and she had the last laugh and the joke was on us. This show never got the credit it deserved for being fresh and different and true to the middle class, blue collared workers out there. It did garner four acting emmy's (3 for Laurie Metcalf and one for Roseanne herself) but it never won one for best comedy series which is ridiculous. This first season DVD is classic. Filled with hilarity and heart, we see the struggles of the working class trying to make ends meet while at the same time learning how to love and live with one another. This show was so funny because we can identify with the characters. The mother is not a lawyer, she is a factory worker, the father is not a doctor, he works for a contractor....they had rough times but they still made everything look funny, maybe not easy, but still FUNNY and REAL. Doesn't that sound familar? It was true to life as it gets and that is why this show is timeless and deserves the 5 stars I've given it. I recommend this first season disk highly.
