Never have trouble opening cans again with this manual can opener by Rosle. Made of stainless steel, the opener cuts along the rim side of cans without leaving sharp edges and reducing the likelihood of accidental cuts. - Church key openers (super cheap) will poke nice triangular holes in the top of your can but won't really take the top off unless you're really intent on doing that and mutilating the can in the process.
- A butterfly can opener (almost as cheap) combines a church key style with an all metal handle, usually one that's pretty thin and while it will open a can it will be difficult and your hands will hurt after.
- Rotary style openers (what most people buy) have a serrated wheel to turn the can and a cutting wheel to cut through the metal. These styles work well and are generally comfortable, although because of their design some people may have trouble squeezing the two handles together. It might take quite a bit of effort to turn the cutting wheel. Also, if the opener is dull or if you use it improperly, you might end up with little shards of metal inside the can afterwards. Also, the top usually falls in and since it's cut, the edges may be sharp. Lastly, these usually always seem to end up getting food in the mechanism, which requires a wash, and subsequently causes them to rust.
- Safety openers (like the Rosle) are conceptually different than all of the above. Rather than cutting through the metal, they are designed to break the seal between the can and the lid.
If you're used to traditional openers this will be a little awkward to use until that "Aha" moment when you figure it out. It's one handle design makes opening cans seem effortless. To use it, lay it sideways on the can with the half ring on top, then start turning. This is the part where you might be confused, especially if you're used to a traditional opener because there's no "clamp" concept here. Turning the wheel requires less effort than a traditional opener (and the lever is pretty comfortable) because you're just breaking a seal, not cutting through metal. The can should turn, but it might seem like nothing is happening. After a full circle, it might seem like nothing happened because the top may not be immediately loose. Likely, it's still "stuck" on but with a little tug, the lid should come right off. It'll stick to the opener until you give it a half turn backwards. This is so that you can toss the lid in the trash without ever having to get your hands dirty touching it.
If you decide to purchase this item, I hope this review helps visualize how to use it. I think it's the best can opener out there, the price was higher than traditional openers, but this takes up much less drawer space, it's cleaner to use, and I feel that it's not as susceptible to rust as it won't really require cleaning, so I hope it lasts longer.
Love the ergonomics. Easy to turn with minimum exertion. Well balanced.
Love the functionality. Works great. Keeps food out of the blade so you don't have to clean it constantly. Leaves the can smooth so you can throw the lid in the trash without worry of it cutting anything (or anyone going through your trash) post toss.
I bought one for myself and one as a gift. I did have to demonstrate how it works, but after you get the hang of it, everyone loves it and wants one!
