About the Author

What a breautiful translation of a beautifully written book. Kim Thuy has a way with words and pictures that puts you in the story and tugs at your emotions at the same time. Her other book Man is also worth reading. Congratulations on winning Canada Reads.

Very easy to read (took me 3 hours) and beautifully written. The author shares her experience as a young boat people settling in and taking root in Quebec. It is mostly a collection of souvenirs and impressions. I was touched by the profound humanity that translates from her experience.
Great read.

I read the book in English and loved the connections between the world of Kim's homeland and the world she found in Quebec. I taught many children here in Victoria who were boat kids and I loved their resiliency and their hard work. I loved how welcome Kim felt in Quebec. It all made me want to read the book in French and I wasn't disappointed. There is a lilt and a flow to the writing in French that is very engaging. My French is good but not perfect and I found the language quite easy to read, a very strong voice for sure!
