Product Description

Product Description

Following a military career of over thirty years, which includes deployments to Bosnia and Afghanistan, Colonel Pat Stogran becomes Canada’s first Veterans Ombudsman. The new Office of the Veterans Ombudsman is intended to be a symbol of Canada’s commitment to the members and veterans of the Canadian Forces, who accept unlimited liability in the service of our country and often make traumatic, life-altering sacrifices. Colonel Stogran is proud to take the assignment, seeing it as an opportunity to give back to all those who serve. But in the next three years, as he encounters nothing but intransigence and malfeasance in the hallowed halls of government, he undergoes a rude awakening to the cesspool of callousness, deceit, and neglect that is the Government of Canada’s response to the needs of its veterans. Stogran’s exposure to the real Government of Canada, which is hidden from the view of mainstream Canadians, reveals that it is nothing like the myth that has been built up around it as a caring and committed model for the rest of the world. It is an experience he describes as more traumatic than the years he spent in war zones, and it will cause him to question what it really means to be a Canadian. Part shocking exposé, part dire and urgent warning, Rude Awakening reveals a culture of government that victimizes our veterans and could also very well threaten the quality of life we all enjoy as Canadians.

Pat Stogran sets the stage by highlighting his early life, his education at both Royal Roads and RMC Military Colleges. His knowledge of wounded warriors and their plight is first hand as a former Battle Group Commander.

As the first Veterans Ombudsman Pat tackled his obligation to make life's for our wounded warriors better. He soon finds out that changing the path of the bureaucracy is an almost impossible task.

This book should be read by anyone that claims to support veterans as an eye opener to how our government operates.

This is an example of truth that seems to fail to make its way to the Canadian people. This is a blunt and to the point narrative that exemplified the disparity Canada's veterans face today. Col. Strogan's journey to the seedy underbelly of our government is an eye opening account to just how flawed our system can be. Anyone that wants to understand this needs to read this Manifesto of truth.

Pat Stogran has done Canada a great service by pointing out his experiences in dealing with the Harper government. He has told 'truth to power' and has given a no holds barred account of how hard it is to make a difference with the 'system' just doesn't want to listen.

Pat Stogran is a brave, honest gentleman and has written about the goings-on in government back rooms in a way we can understand. The official politico-speak we are subjected to on a daily basis leaves a very bitter taste in my mouth and here is a man who has the courage to tell it as it is. Bravo to Pat Stogran for a really great insight.

It will open the eyes of those who weren't part of the process, there were a few who stood with Pat during his last days and through our protests in the following years. I knew of most of the details but was not surprised that Pat was removed by a bureaucracy that strives on authoritarianism. Thanks for sharing your story.

I ordered this book and could not put it down. As a CPO1 I did not know or serve with the Colonel but after reading his book and the leadership he portrays I must say I would follow him to the depths of the world. It is most unfortunate that as a career soldier I have little respect for some of our most senior officers, this book reminded me on how many flag officers deserve no respect as they are all about themselves. Shame on those we elect not to take charge of the dirty senior civilian staff and he names a few. Terrible people. A great read, thanks Colonel. Let's hope that one day veterans of this country stop being bullied and discredited by government.

This book shows us all that once you have Government convinced, you still have the Bureaucrats to convince, and they hate any changes to their daily lives.

It also demonstrates to Veterans how we are dumped by the wayside in to save a few dollars.
