Rusty-James knows he is a tough teen, but he wants to be even tougher, just like his older brother, the Motorcycle Boy. He wants to stay calm and laugh when things get dangerous, to be the strongest streetfighter and the most respected guy this side of the river.

I chose to read this book because I really like the author. I probably wouldn't have read it otherwise because I didn't like the title until after I read the book, and I don't like the cover.
A lot of the people who wrote reviews of this said it was really easy to understand. I guess they thought that because it's short and doesn't use big words or anything. I think it's actually complex if you think about it. You think you understand it after you read it but you don't until a few weeks later. It's the kind of book I read more than once. Read it all in one sitting. Motorcycle Boy is the best character I've ever read. I understood everything he said, I think, except for, "Kid, I never got past the river," so if somebody understands that let me know what it means.
This is definitely a good book. The Motorcycle Boy is one of the coolest characters ever. The ending of the book hits you really hard. It's weird how you can see it however you want - like you can think it's really deep or really not. I thought about it after I read it. The characters are realistic, especially Rusty-James (the protagonist) and Steve (his best friend).
For some reason I don't think adults would like this book as much as kids do. It was cool to read because even though I'm about Rusty-James's age my life is so different.
I haven't seen the movie but it sounds a lot different so I don't think it would be nearly as good.
S.E. Hinton is brilliant and it's really cool that she wrote her first book, THE OUTSIDERS, when she was not that much older than me.
It might look easy, but looks can be deceiving.
