The first box, which is the outside packaging, was a little cheaper but is really nice looking. The inner box which I imagine is for display arrived in perfect condition and lacks all the gaudiness while being thicker stock. Inside is the statue, which is quite big and of reasonable quality. It's medium thickness PVC, I think? Should stand up to a little abuse, but the paint probably won't. Looks nice above my gaming PC. The reproduction cartridge is a hoot, the ring inside is metal, then there's a metal card that was intended for your game code but apparently that didn't work.
As with others the code sheet fell out of the second box immediately. All in all, about the only CE I'm going to buy this decade, but it's been twenty years of waiting for this so hey it's nice to have my nostalgia tickled.
Star off for not being too great a deal - the game is $20 CAD so it's $60 (after tax and prime discount) for a statue, reproduction cart and a metal card/ring. Probably shoulda knocked a couple boxes off and also for amazon delaying the shipping which is pretty inexcusable on an item preordered last year.

On the plus side, the sonic figure is huge, but on the other hand paint's a little too glossy and cheap for my tastes. If you're iching to do something with the genesis innards, they're completely hollow. If you wanna shove a rasberry pi in there and run some emulators that might be cool.
Oh, and Sonic Mania itself is amazing. Sucks they delayed the PC release, but I couldn't hold myself back, so I bought it on PS4 as well. Aside from some strange stage choices, I left pretty happy. This is the classic experience you've been waiting decades for.
On the plus side, the presentation is beautiful. It's a box within a box kinda deal and the inner box has this heavy flap on it. Once inside that box, you see your digital download card, the much larger than expected statue, the metal collector's card and the gorgeous Genesis cartridge with the stunning ring inside.
The statue takes 2x AA size batteries for power and the "SEGA!" sound is quite loud. Holding it in my hands made me feel like a kid again. I haven't owned a Genesis in years and it was quite the walk down memory lane. *raises glass* To good times...
Unfortunately, I cannot tell you about the game itself, just yet. The PC version was delayed until August 29th (we'll see, I'm expecting later...) so all I can do at the moment is add it to my Steam account and wait for them to unlock it whenever Sega gives them the go ahead. Once I actually get to play the game itself, I'll update accordingly.
As for the Collector's Edition, itself, it's a fantastic presentation with lovely content, but it's overpriced. I preordered it back in September of '16, so I was able to get it at a discount. At the price I paid, it's worth it. At the current asking price of $69.99? No. As impressive as it is, it's not $70.00 impressive. The statue piece is hollow (it's very light, you can tap your fingers on it and get that plastic echo), the buttons are very clicky and don't move smoothly, I worry about their longevity. The cartridge, the ring, and the metal card are all top notch, but they're not $70 impressive. They just aren't.
I know, I know, $20.00 of that is going to the game, so the stuff in the box comes out to be about $50.00 when it's all said and done, and for some, that's all right. To each their own. For me, I feel it's a bit overpriced for what you're getting.
PC version is delayed two weeks.
Allegedly you get Sonic 1 as a gift, which I already own, so it's no palliative.
Sega support is non-responsive.
The collectibles inside were nicely packaged except for the plastic card with the steam code written on it, fell out of the box while opening it. The Sonic statue is a light weight hollow plastic, I expected a heavier statue like the Overwatch collectible but this is still nice. The statue requires two AA batteries and even though there's a volume switch on it, the "SEGA" voice is still always the same.
The box also includes a metal "Collectors Card" but I have no idea where something like this would be showcased so I keep it in my old Sonic Wallet.
The Photo for the Sonic Mania cartridge showcased on amazon is different to how it is in person, the ring is encased in a black plastic as opposed to what the photo shows and the ring itself is a nicely made metal ring (definitely too big to wear on your finger unless you have sausage fingers like Sonic).
Overall nice presentation and was definitely worth the extra cash if you're a Sonic nut.
