Product Description

Cancel the wedding–the groom is dead.

When a tycoon’s son is murdered the night before his wedding, the enraged and grief-stricken father offers private detective Dan Reno (that’s Reno, as in no problemo), a life-changing bounty to find the killer. Reno, nearly broke, figures he’s finally landed in the right place at the right time. It’s a nice thought, but when a band of crooked cops get involved, Reno finds himself not only earning every penny of his paycheck, but also fighting for his life.

Who committed the murder, and why? Which cops can he trust, if any? Haunted by his murdered father and a violent, hard drinking past, Reno wants no more blood on his hands. But a man’s got to make a living, and backing off is not in his DNA. Traversing the snowy alpine winter in the Sierras and the lonely deserts of Nevada, Reno must revert to his old ways to survive. Because the fat bounty won’t do him much good if he’s dead…

Private investigator, Dan Reno, is attending his niece’s wedding in South Lake Tahoe. He plans to take in a little skiing while he’s there, but things don’t go as planned when the groom, Sylvestor Bascom, is stabbed to the night before the ceremony. The groom’s wealthy father hires Dan to identify the killer and bring him in. But plenty of folks, including members of the sheriff’s department, go to great lengths to ensure that the truth won’t come to light.

Stateline is an intense, action-packed ride with lots going on. Although I’d never heard of author Dave Stanton until now, his storytelling skills are right up there with the best. Based on the protagonist’s voice, intelligent plot, and smooth narrative style, I knew I was in good hands by page ten. The subplots, and twists and turns were excellent. It’s not often that I praise the stereotypical loner, alcohol-loving P.I. but it really worked in this story. Stanton is a terrific storyteller.

This is a fast moving quest to find the killer of the son of a tycoon, killed at his Stag party the night before his wedding. The twist is that the Tycoon has little confidence in the local sheriff and co to get it right and so hires one of the wedding guests who just happens to be private investigator, Dan Reno, Reno currently has a bad job working for a whingeing boss which he hates. He is also very broke so the huge bounty the Tycoon places on the head of his son's murderer is just too much of an inducement for Reno.

He realises it's going to be tough, beating the Police to the discovery, as he must, to earn the big prize. However, the going quickly gets much tougher than he ever could have dreamed with hints of strange sexual deviations and weird friends that don't seem the sort of company a Tycoon's son should have kept. As the body count rises Reno must battle his own demons to keep on the case or even to stay alive. As the novel moves to it's climax the twists and turns one has come to expect from a Stanton novel really come into their own and make for an exciting ending.

I particularly enjoyed the author's excellent characterisation of all the protagonists. His characters leap off the page for the reader, whether it's the rather ditsy bride, Reno's Ex, or the blundering sheriff. He paints them all large and make you feel involved with them. This makes the plot live .

If you enjoy blood and guts and a grand chase of discovery, this is a great read.

I wrote the wrong review and this is the replacement for the actual book. The opther review was for a completely different one by a different author. (sorry), anyway this was a pretty well all nighter of a read. An interesting plot, some interesting characters and almost believable action. Plenty of violence and absolutely amazing recuperative powers of out hero with cast iron balls and hair on his ass a yard long.
That said, there were a few over the top moments and I probably will read another one in the series before deciding if this was a good beginning, or a fluke.
