Having been a Pet Shop Boys fan from the very beginning, I was anxious for the release of their new album, Super. This was the Pet Shop Boys second outing with Stuart Price at the helm as producer. Price was successful in guiding the Electric album, recorded 3 years earlier to number 3 in the British charts. Although, Super achieved a similar feat, it also became their first number 1 on the billboard,dance/electronic chart since 2003. Where Super's predecessor was euphoric and filled with lengthy dance tracks this collection of 12 songs seems somehow hollow and unmemorable. To be clear, the album exhibits many of the Stuart Price flourishes one might expect. The album is brimming with layers synth riffs and percussion fills and at times just some good old fashioned disco. There are a few uptempo tracks with some mid tempo and lower tempo songs dispersed throughout. My biggest complaint about the album is the lack of any strong melody. I became worried after hearing the first single, The Pop Kids as it would only be the second time in their career where I disliked the lead single. (the first being " winner " back in 2012) I'd hoped that there would be better tracks to discover on the parent album. Although there are some stand out tracks on Super, for me, it's light on great moments and somehow seems mediocre. Sad Robot World is a quiet yet effective ballad about artificial intelligence. Other honorable mentions are Say it to me and Burn, both of which echo back to their earlier 80's work. Into thin air is a rich mid tempo track that sounds truly unique in contrast to the rest of their catalogue. Two instrumental cuts appear but admittedly, I've never been found of instrumental tracks interrupting the flow of an album so its always an instant minus for me.Read more ›

Great new album, lots of fun catchy new songs. I can't believe after all these years PSB are still going strong.
