HASH(0xa279e9a8) out of 5 stars Facinating history Sept. 5 2008
By Scion of Bellerphon - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Having served in the current counter-insurgency conflict in Afghanistan I have a natural curiosity about other tactics and theories on counterinsurgency warfare. The Saints" the Rhodesian Light Infantry" is a indepth biography of one of the most effective and truely light infnatry forces in the history of the world. Over 500 pages of indepth firsthand accounts and stunning photos of the RLI. While it is considered to be an "unpopular war" in the circles of historians, I have found much of the material pertinent as well as enligtening. It is well worth the investment and for any militray historian or buff of the COIN wars of southern africa this is a must have. The DVD that is included makes a wonderful Multimedia companion to the text.

HASH(0xa15cb498) out of 5 stars Detailed History of the RLI July 20 2009
By S. Clark - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Wife bought me this book due to my background and interest in Counter Insurgency Warfare. The RLI was an incredible example of sound tactics, raw talent, and incredible esprit de corps. No other unit in history has as many operational combat jumps. Plus I can't think of another army in the world that would allow commandos to jump into combat wearing shorts and t-shirts.

This book is an incredible resource that gives the entire history of the famed RLI. It is packed full of information and pictures dedicated to a group of men that defied the world and earned a place in the history books as arguably one of the best counter insurgency forces in history.

My copy came with a DVD that has interviews and old film footage of RLI operations in Rhodesia, and Mozambique. This is a must have for anyone interested in the RLI, counter insurgency units, and the "Bush Wars" of Southern Africa from the mid 1960's to very early 1980.

HASH(0xa25141bc) out of 5 stars Simply Amazing Nov. 20 2008
By Erich L. Swafford - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This is the definitive history and tribute to "The Incredibles". The RLI is one of those units that, for true military aficionados, is spoken with the same reverence as Legio X, Davout's 3rd Corps, la Légion étrangère, the impi's/ibutho's of Shaka Zulu, and 1st SS Panzer. This was one of those rare units that was lead by, and composed of, "first-thinkers". They virtually invented the science of COIN (counter-insurgency).

With 20/20 hindsight, I believe most objective people will agree that the struggle of Rohodesia's white minority was a noble endeavor, despite what it seemed like at the time. Certainly, it is difficult to find anything good about the Mugabe regime which succeeded it , and which still devastates the land and people of Zimbabwe. It is unfortunate that the issue of skin color came to dominate all rational discussion of the conflict. As a Democrat and (huge) Obama supporter, I suppose I am surprised by my own view on this. But facts are facts - regardless if they fit into one's preconceived notions.

In any case, do yourself a favor and buy this book. I am truly and deeply proud to own this small piece of one of the greatest military units the World has ever seen. Beyond that, the quality and loving attentional to detail is like nothing I've ever seen. As I said, it's a fitting tribute to some incredible men - many of whom still fight the "good fight" in Afghanistan today.

May God bless them and keep them safe.

HASH(0xa2512f6c) out of 5 stars Excellent book about the RLI Jan. 29 2010
By E. J. Boks - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This book provides a very detailed account (from the Rhodesian side) of the Rhodesian bush war in the 1960s and 1970s. While the RLI is the main topic, commentary from other sources (the Rhodesian air force and the Rhodesian African Rifles) is amply included. The included DVD is excellent and provides rare footage (from newsreels) of actual combat and RLI sticks in action.
If you're unbiased towards the country's history and interested in the exemplary conduct of a small determined army fighting under embargo against a much larger enemy, then this book is a must-have. For those who are biased (saying it was a racist war), the book offers a glimpse of life in Zimbabwe before Mugabe and his cronies took over and raped it, and shows the people who sacrificed their lives to prevent this.
HASH(0xa25dffa8) out of 5 stars An Outstanding resource about the RLI Aug. 14 2012
By A. Gift For You - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Honestly, whether you are a military historian, student of the RLI, researching or a participant in COIN operations or simply a wargamer looking for an historical reference on the Rhodesian Light Infantry, "The Saints: The Rhodesian Light Infantry" by Alexander Binda and Chris Cocks, is a MUST HAVE for your library. The quality and attention to detail that went into this book sets a standard few recent military history books come close to. The inclusion of the 90 minute DVD about the history of the RLI is also a very nice bonus that more books of this type should emulate. The authors and the publisher are to be commended for this scholarly and quality publication. The other reviews have done an excellent job praising this book, I'm just echoing their comments.
