This book is an incredible resource that gives the entire history of the famed RLI. It is packed full of information and pictures dedicated to a group of men that defied the world and earned a place in the history books as arguably one of the best counter insurgency forces in history.
My copy came with a DVD that has interviews and old film footage of RLI operations in Rhodesia, and Mozambique. This is a must have for anyone interested in the RLI, counter insurgency units, and the "Bush Wars" of Southern Africa from the mid 1960's to very early 1980.
With 20/20 hindsight, I believe most objective people will agree that the struggle of Rohodesia's white minority was a noble endeavor, despite what it seemed like at the time. Certainly, it is difficult to find anything good about the Mugabe regime which succeeded it , and which still devastates the land and people of Zimbabwe. It is unfortunate that the issue of skin color came to dominate all rational discussion of the conflict. As a Democrat and (huge) Obama supporter, I suppose I am surprised by my own view on this. But facts are facts - regardless if they fit into one's preconceived notions.
In any case, do yourself a favor and buy this book. I am truly and deeply proud to own this small piece of one of the greatest military units the World has ever seen. Beyond that, the quality and loving attentional to detail is like nothing I've ever seen. As I said, it's a fitting tribute to some incredible men - many of whom still fight the "good fight" in Afghanistan today.
May God bless them and keep them safe.
If you're unbiased towards the country's history and interested in the exemplary conduct of a small determined army fighting under embargo against a much larger enemy, then this book is a must-have. For those who are biased (saying it was a racist war), the book offers a glimpse of life in Zimbabwe before Mugabe and his cronies took over and raped it, and shows the people who sacrificed their lives to prevent this.
