Once I mounted the drive it showed up as having only 256GB. I was confused and so I called Samsung Support. They told me to run a few tests and it turns out that the drive I have received is an older model 840 PRO with 256GB capacity even though the disk and packaging both have stickers to claim it was an 860 PRO 2TB drive! Returning this for a refund but now hesitant to order the same model again if the replacement comes from the same batch.
Hence the need for SSD. I have buildservers running off commercial Samsung SSDs churning hundreds of builds a day. HP will tell me to buy their enterprise SSD. Whatever, I'll use commercial, do backups and deal with the failure that has yet to occur.
In general I cannot imagine working with mechanical drives. Whatever you do, if your laptop has a mechanical drive, throw it in the garbage and get an SSD. YESTERDAY. It will change your life.
As I said failure rate for the Samsungs is zero. I've had many failures with random no name SSD brands. I've had Transcend M.2 SSDs lose my primary work drive. Good luck retrieving that. I've even had the king Intel SSDs fail. But not Samsung. Am I lucky? Is Samsung that good? Time will tell, but I only buy Samsung SSDs now.
That is not to say these SSDs are good forever. You might be surprised to know that SSDs at least from Samsung are warrantied for a number of years, OR an amount of bytes written. The PRO line is rated for more use than the EVO line. In any case you should install Samsung Magician. It will tell you what your usage is at and use that as a barometer to understand if a failure is more likely. The software will also annoy you incessantly to update your SSD firmware. Of course they warn you to do a full backup before a firmware upgrade. No thanks.
If you can afford the premium get the PRO it has somewhat better performance. But I've got guys running EVOs for years and no problem. Whatever Samsung SSD I go with I've yet to go wrong.
Con: Expected better, but I am not finish with trying with all different settings.
I purchased this drive mostly for reliability, and hope this is a case. I purchased it as I wanted it in the first place but did not think I wanted to afford it. Since it came on sale for $399CDN, I thought Marry Christmas to me.
I replaced 240Gb Mushkin Reactor an excellent MLC drive, but I ended up wanting a larger drive. I purchased Intel 545 512Gb, with slight performance loss, then I purchased Crucial MX500_250Gb, which was on par with Mushkin as far as performance went, but it vent back to the box as I will sell it to someone who does not need larger size.
I also decided to get a larger drive, to take advantage of “Over Provisioning” which is currently set at 10%. TRIM status enabled and RAPID Mode ON.
Attached are few pictures from my findings.
- Use the Windows 10 Media Creation tool to put the Windows 10 installer on a USB, power down your PC and pull the HDD out and replace with this SSD.
- Power up your PC, making sure the Windows 10 USB is plugged in and follow the installation from there
- Add your apps and go!
Whether it can handle 4K30 in either RAW format - that was not tested.
Had this drive been able to do 4K60 in RAW, it would have been 5/5. So far, only Sony and Angelbird make drives fast enough to handle that volume of data.

Its really good. But if you want to use it for normal purpose it's better you buy 860 EVO not 860 EVO Pro.
