Product Description

Review

"Do leaders matter? Are leaders born or made? The Science of Leadership focuses on the psychology of leadership. Findings from psychological research enable an evidence-based approach that explores global research in organisational leadership. Barling incorporates personal reflections based on 20 years' involvement with leadership research and executive leadership development. The book translates leadership theories and research into everyday behaviours, and explains how researchers generate knowledge on leadership. Barling explores what leadership can teach us beyond the boardroom, for example, in sports, politics, and schools. Separate chapters cover topics including gender and leadership, destructive leadership, and followship." --WITSReview

HASH(0xa12de8ac) out of 5 stars The book that bridges the knowing doing gap in leadership! Feb. 22 2014
By catherine bell - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Dr. Barling's book is outstanding and a must read for any manager, leader, aspiring executive, and corporate coach. You should read this book because it provides practical insight based on a data minded approach. It informs the reader on the research behind leadership theory and articulates it in such a useable and readable fashion. I was particularly ignited by the chapter on female leadership and am left inspired to actually do something about the issues that Dr. Barling raises. An inspirational read, one that will help to serve society as a whole in the long run.

HASH(0xa12de7ec) out of 5 stars dense, jargon rich, thoroughly interesting Feb. 6 2015
By OceanHome - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
The author does a superb job of introducing the study of leadership at a level that a well educated but non specialist reader can follow. I did find the writing jargon rich- I am not sure the author is even aware how much. As a scientist, I could wish for more graphical representations of the innumerable comments on the results of studies; i would have liked to see the data, but most were in words only. You'll need to focus while reading! If you are after a solid primer on basic leadership science, backed by innumerable references, I recommend this book.

HASH(0xa1fc809c) out of 5 stars Good content, problems with kindle indexing. July 28 2014
By Marcy Harris - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
Nice overview of "evidence based" leadership, great synthesis. Reading the e-version of the book on the Kindle app is fine, however the only way to index content is to create your own highlights and/or bookmarks. There is no word search capability, the links in the index are not functional, and there are no page numbers (only locations). Major problem! I would give the book 4 stars except for this problem.
