HASH(0xa7dc0ca8) out of 5 stars But I Hate Lavender July 24 2013
By no name - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
The beginning of this book I liked very much. It was kind of like a pep talk. She talked about getting organized and keeping your head in the task of the day (Monday morning we wash the clothes), but the rest of the book are just lists of cutesy things to do with very little practical advise. Things like having lunch by yourself with good china and wine and a flower in a vase. I know she's trying to have us take the time to have beautiful lives, but really, I eat microwave meals so I don't have to wash a plate, let alone the good silver, cloth napkin, and bone china. Seriously, if I have to do so much as an extra teaspoon some days....Then there's the lavender. She uses it in everything, probably even her gas tank, "To make ordinary petrol smell scrumptious." I HATE lavender, so there goes half the book.
The book was cheap on Kindle (even cheaper if you borrow it like I did), so it's worth the download for the pep talk, but be prepared to be bored with the rest.

HASH(0xa85440fc) out of 5 stars How to make everything a bit more wonderful June 12 2012
By Mrs. N. J. Claxton - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
What is a vintage housekeeper? We tend to wear lipstick and a smile as we care for our homes, but we aren't stepford wives! We like to whip up our own housecleaning products rather than reach for a chemical filled nasty, but it is just as likely to be gin in our teacups as tea! What is a scrumptious treat? It is a little idea that doesn't take much time or energy or money, but makes life just that little bit more lovely. Think everything from tucking a tiny flower bud into your fridge to greet you in the morning to popping a spoonful of cinnamon into your coffee in the autumn, and a myriad of other things in between.

If you care about having lovely things in your life, and feel no moment is too simple to make special, then this book is for you. And lucky, lucky you, if you like it, there is a whole website to discover later!

HASH(0xa85444bc) out of 5 stars The Little Things That Make a House a Home June 12 2012
By MoxieDoll - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Alison May has compiled the most comprehensive list of small touches to add around your house to make it cozier, warmer, cooler, whatever-ier that makes your house a home. Almost everything is inexpensive, not terribly labor intensive and just adds that one thing that takes your home from average to remarkable. With tips for every holiday and season, I highly highly recommend this book.

I didn't know what to expect from this book. It was a gift. I thought it was a cookbook. What a lovely surprise to discover a book all about making your home a comfortable, personal, soothing retreat. I loved the author's voice and I am inspired to start taking little steps to softening my home a bit.
