SoT's is a refreshing, unique game that offers a new multiplayer pirate experience unlike most out there. Yes, the game is MUCH better with other friends that can join your crew, HANDS DOWN. It is VERY team-based, as the bigger the ship you get, the more teamwork focused it is to properly sail/defend yourself/gather loot/etc.
You CAN solo this game, although it is for sure stacked against you, as you generally need more than one player to do most common world events, resulting in the most loot for your efforts, otherwise, you usually run into a full crew of players in a bigger ship that will destroy you in no time and take all your loot (play for 2-3 hrs and get your loot stolen, no fun). Having said that, the game scales up world events and difficulty, so if you are alone in your crew in the smallest ship (Sloop, 1-2 players max) the game will only set world events/npc's/etc against you as such. If you have 3 players on the mid size ship, it will scale up difficulty for things as such. This mechanic makes it at least possible to play as a solo player on a sloop to take out say, a kraken attack, with some concentration. You will likely get lonely and bored after a while though, so maybe see if at least one other friend may be interested in giving this game a go with you.
** IF you expect to come from all these modern fast pace FPS games where it's nonstop action in your face, you may have to dial it back a bit and relax, or this may not be for you. Cannon ship fights/npc fights/world events (krakens, megaladons, ghost ships, etc) are fun, but they're not all the time. Lots of time is spent sailing around, solving riddles, finding "x marks the spot" type of stuff, etc etc.
Mind you, after years of playing MW/Halo's myself, this game is awesome. I love the water, love the graphics and styling, it's a much refreshing needed break from most games these days... and hey, like most, it's actually FUN! I feel like most games these days have blurred the line between what is actually "fun" and "grindy". Sure there's grind in SoT's, but its a relaxing grind if you enjoy this kind of gameplay. Yes there are microtransactions that Rare introduced a while ago, but so far, they are ONLY cosmetic/pets, and they have their own currency, so it's really not that bad. Not to mention once you learn enough about the game, how to make efficient loot/gold for your play time, it can be handsomely rewarding for the amounts you get - (looking at you RockStar, GTA5 online *cough cough* where you need to grind days to gather $millions just to buy a dumb car).
Final point: There isn't really much of a mid or end point in this game to be honest. You can reach "Pirate Legend" with a faction of your choice after so many levels, unlocking a special area and special voyages resulting in better loot and some cosmetics, but that's about it. It's meant to be a consistent, passive experience where you and your buddies and just jump on, sail, explore, enjoy, battle others/nps, loot & sell, rinse & repeat. If you can't handle that, go back to listening to 40yr old neckbeard 12yr old wannabe's on Modern Warfare cry about getting killed because 5 other players were camping behind him for the last 10 matches.
TL;DR: On the surface, it doesn't feel like much. If your willing to learn and relax with some friends that don't mind team work based games, pick up Sea of Thieves.
When you can get some time in where you aren't stalked and picked on by other players. The adventure side of the game is a lot of fun. Following clues to find treasure, exploring islands, shipwrecks, caves, and more to find items, messages in bottles, and other items. Sailing the seas of Sea of Thieves can be a lot of fun as well. There is a Kraken that can turn up randomly to try and pull your ship down, uncharted islands, wrecks, and underwater areas to explore.
The visual style of the game is cartoony, but also very fitting. The games unique look is one of the positives that is also enhanced for XBOX One X.
Sea of Thieves would have deserved a 5 star rating in my opinion, if the game at least separated solo players from larger crews on bigger ships. Ideally, there should have been a complete PvE mode for the game or some sort of battle system where you could opt out of combat with other players.
UPDATE:
It’s April 3rd and the game didn’t arrive yet... Can’t believe I had to pay 13$ of game pass subscription for a game I already bought but isn’t there yet. Very dispointed, I tried the game tho and its very good! Love it!!
UPDATE 2: I contacted the Amazon support and they helped me a lot, my package was considered as lost so they sent a new one and it’s supposed to arrive today (April 5th) , which is my birthday so I’m very happy to finally receive it almost like a birthday gift! :)
